A BLACK cat
Stopping for hitting an animal (other than a dog because it may be required by law, in NH anyways) is a bad idea. NO matter what, the owner is going to be pissed at you. Stopping isn't going to do any good, it's dead and it's not going to change anything except get yourself involved in useless drama. And it's not worth getting into legal trouble over either from a dumb pet owner trying to get "revenge".
Natural selection.
Natural selection.

Well, lirathal has a point!!! You should have stopped to see if the cat had on a tag so you could get the owner to pay for the damages.
It also appears that you may have a case here. It sounds like the cat did a hit and fly. You did say the cat flew into a ditch right? There is your proof. Good luck and I would begin the investagation starting from the ditch.

Just a little humor thats all.
if u wanna be an cheepo ****, find the cat and check the tags. then go find the owner and sue them for the damages because a pet's owner does indeed have the legal obligation to keep their pet under control. remember stories on the news about dogs getting out of the yard and killing a boy? the owner was convicted of manslaughter because she was inherently responsible for what her dogs did, esp when they were allowed to escape off the property.
now a scratch and dent u should just take car of urself...but with the radiator out, ur lookin at at least 2000 in damage right now, and its up to u if u wanna be payin 500 more a yr in insurance because of it

Obviously Dustin, you dont have any pets... maybe a dog.
Natural selection? Since when is a Mustang mowing down a cat NATURAL?
I worked in animal medicine for 8 years. Never ONCE did I meet an owner that was out for REVENGE. Some were angry, yes. In fact, the most angry owner was a Pit Bull owner whose drug deal went bad, and his dog got shot by his buyer!
HBCs amount for about 50% of the Emergency animal care in California. I have met plenty of appreciative owners who were grateful that a driver at least had the common decency to notify them.

I had a purebred dwarf rabbit once who we used to let run around the yard. One day I saw a feral cat ready to pounce on him from across the yard. By a stroke of luck I had a BB gun sitting right next to me. I made the cat change his mind.
Now if the dumb rabbit ran into the cat's mouth, like the cat in this case ran into the horse's mouth, I wouldn't be pissed at the cat. Cats just don't hang out in the road, they're not stupid. It was trying to do the old, "I can get across first" routine.
I've run over lots of animals in my day, frogs, a turtle (darn thing wouldn't move fast enough), had birds explode on my windshield, squirrels, mice, groundhogs, you name it. Never any domestic animals though.

Geoff, dogs are a completely different story. There are leash laws in most states, and KILLING a person is a much different case than damage to the front end of his car.
Cats are known free roamers. The ASPCA does not catch cats, unless it is a nuisance. Cats are not required on leashes, they are not required to be tagged, or permitted. That being the case, you cant make a good case for suing anyone in regards to damage to thier vehicle when THEY hit the animal. If the cat was damaging the car by jumping on it, you might be able to get the police involved, but still a hard one to get settled.

Good thing it wasn't your UZI sitting there

That would've really changed the cat's mind.

Actually, I thought we were talking about the damage to the car, and how to resolve it with the pets owner. Some believe its the right thing to do, walk up to an owner whose cat you just spread all over the road and say, "Hey did you see what your cat did to my car? Pay up buddy, its not cheap!"
Others think it might be better to just say, "I am really sorry your cat is dead, it was an accident." and leave it at that.
Assuming it was a stray, it was still a living thing.
Dont know how it is that in 20 years of driving, I have never hit a single animal... not even a possum.

Goddess help me... the white one is the kitten, and he weighs more than the Queen, the big black one. (he is only 12 weeks in the pic)
The three of them chase each other around our house... if you are sitting downstairs, it sounds like two grown men wrestling upstairs! LOL We have had friends go running up and look just to make sure someone didnt break in...
Love my babies...

Well, this sounds fun. Can I play? Huh, can I? Here goes!:
By the same token, since when is medicine/medical practice that heals or saves someone or an animal "natural?" Nature woulda had that animal suffer, be slow, and get eaten... But nope, we're gonna save it from "natural selection!"
Man is 'natural', yes? (not counting test tube babies, right?
) So the Mustang is now 'natural', because man built it. Therefore, a Mustang mowing down a cat is perfectly natural. Unfortunate, but natural. A 'natural' man made device of epic Darwinian porportions performing it's function on cats everywhere. Among other animals... (Man? Dogs? Birds? Amoebas on the pavement?)Surely the cat that is big enough to do such damage would have been around long enough to know it's not a good idea to play chicken with a car. Unless it was deaf. In which case, nature would have had it's way with Kitty if it weren't for those meddling owners! (Scooby ref! Yay!)
Just sayin'...
/BTW, dang, that cat killed your car! Man. That's some cat. Did it have an 'S' on it's chest? Or did it look more like Wolverine?
//I know. I'm an imp for such things...

youre cats are beautiful!!! I have three cats as well two Black cats and one Tiger striped one. We also have two dogs. We would be devasted if anything happened to one of them.
None are declawed and none will see the outside, unless they let me put a leash on them.
Now back to the starter of this thread, I am very sorry about your Mustang! That must be very depressing. I hope you get it fixed soon!

Ouch cats. I am down to a single JRT now.
I have not had a cat since December 1999. My perfect kitty ran out the door, and a perfect hiney hit her and killed her, and left her in the driveway to die.
Have tried to replace her since, but she was one of a kind. I hand raised her, and she was one of us.
But this one time......I was out walking my greyhound and a loose rottweiler attacked us.......And my hubby had to shoot the dog to get him to quit attacking. Imagine going to the neighbors- Your loose dog tried to kill mine, we shot it to keep from being killed ourself........you owe us $1,500 in vet bills(rott tore off my greys hind leg muscle, had to have it put back on).
Never hit a thing in my car though(knock on wood). Even a squirrel.
