Why a Mustang (long post)

Nice to see such a wide range of ages on this forum. All with mustang ownership in common. I was wondering how you all came to owning a mustang, and what one do you own. What did you consider, if any, as an alternative?

I'll start. As I have stated, I am 64. I just bought a 2013 V6 Mustang M6. I traded in a 2001 Corvette coupe to get the Mustang.

In 64 years, this is the first mustang I have ever owned. Not the first Ford though. Raised my family with the help of two one Ford Taurus Wagon, and two Ford Mini Vans. Currently family has 1 min van, 2 focus', one auto one stick, and of course the Mustang.

In my life I have owned several "muscle" cars, mostly in the late 60's early 70's. Had a 69 Charger 383 magnum 4sp. (which at the time was not considered a really fast car, my buddy had the 440 magnum and there was the Hemi. Still it had 335 HP) Had small 66 GTO auto, 65 Impala SS, 64 Buick special convertible with stock V8 aluminum heads, borg warner T10 trans and of course Hurst linkage. Oh had a 390 Mercury Montego also.

When I retired wanted to drive a car that had some power, so I looked as mustangs and Vettes. I almost got a 2007 Shelby 350 and almost got a beautiful 2001 Shelby Cobra convertible. Was not to be. I did get the Corvette and enjoyed it a lot. Did some minor repairs, like headlight motor, but started to have to pay dealer for work. It turned out to be costly. Also GM has stopped supporting the C5 models completely. That means some critical parts are not available.

I made a decision to trade in the Corvette while I could get a fair price and purchase a new Mustang. The Mustang offered the same "fun" factor plus some "Bells and Whistles", SYNC NAV. etc. Mostly it has a warranty to cover any problems for three years. I've learned over the years that extended warranties are good to have if your keeping your car for long periods of time, and can't do the work yourself. Needless to say I am enjoying the car to no end. Good power, Good Gas mileage, Good looks (IMHO) feels great on the road and one of the more important things (If your my age you will remember this) a great radio. It is just an all around fun car.

That's my story, whats yours ?

I'm 20. I started in an 05 Pontiac vibe 5 speed and it was an ok starter car for sure but then I wanted a truck so I sold that car and bought an 08 ranger 4 banger 5 speed ha well Wrecked that truck and my parent gave me a rinky dink 92 single cab Nissan pickup 4 banger 5 speed. Drove it for a couple months then found a good deal on a 95 king cab nissan pickup. All these boring trucks lead me to want a car. Well I hadn't paid much attention to many mustangs at that point but one had always caught my eye. There was a guy at school who had a silver roush(stage 1 or 2) regardless I loved the look of that car! I started looking around and found my deal on Craigslist. Bought my 05 in the end of 10' with only 32k miles and been enjoying it since.

I'm 27. My first car was a Civic EX riced out... was in highschool so i didn't care parents paid for the car so i drove it into the ground. Moved from that to a V6 Fusion that i got used. drove that for awhile. Finally got a really job in my career field. After a couple months i wanted to get a new car to replace the fusion which had 124k miles on it.

At first I wanted a Camaro SS. Took it for a test drive. Wasn't too impressed. Continued my search and threw the Mustang in the mix and i knew i wanted it to be a 2011+ with the 5.0L engine. Came across a deal too good to be true. Took it for a test drive and fell in love.

Funny side note. My most recent ex who i was having this weird hang out and hook but we arn't together relationship. Flipped her lid and accused me of buying the car to get her back. because 1 i wanted her back and 2 it was her favorite car... Best purchase i ever made cause we haven't talked in almost a year. NEVER LOOKED BACK.

I'll be 50 in May. My first Mustang was a '65 Pedal Car I received for Christmas when I was 2. (Dad is a car guy). I always loved Mustangs growing up, and I purchased an '87 Mustang GT as my first new car after college graduation. Life intervened and a very tall (6'7") husband who couldn't fit in the '87 along with needing a vehicle that would haul three 150 pound dogs made me say goodbye to the Mustang in 1997. Since then, I've had a BMW and a MINI Cooper S, both of which I loved, but nothing sounds like a Mustang. In 2010, Ford reconfigured the interior of the Mustangs so the seats could be adjusted and my husband would fit. In the last two years, I've finally been able to come back to Mustangs. We currently have a '12 Boss and a '12 GT500 in the garage, and have fun at our local racetrack for High Performance Driving days, as well as just a run to the mountains or the beach on the weekends.

i've had several imports. i always like the late 80's mustangs and camaros, and of course the 60's & 70's. i enjoyed watching the new models come out over the years, especially the 03 concept mustang (anyone remember that beauty!?). i try look for cars that are unique in some way. the 2002 wrx being a prime example - awd turbo sedan! the mustang certainly became a lot more unique with the retro styling and then the power plant i started reading about in 2010 really got me hooked. v8's are a dying breed so i can cross this off my bucket list. plus the car is a great handler and lets not forget the rich history. it's kind of cool too having a performance car with a solid rear axle!

I'm 53, second Mustang. I didn't care for the previous generation styling... but I liked the one immediately before that. Couldn't afford something 'impractical' back then. Went to look at a Mustang back in December of '09, and the salesman showed me an '09 base model. It was cold and raining, and I wasn't paying attention to the exterior enough (or at all) to realize it wasn't the '10... but the base interior was was too stark and it only took a minute to talk myself out of that. Didn't even drive it. Bought a new Taurus instead. Sigh. It was probably a week later that I realized I hadn't seen the '10... so a few months later I started looking again. Got the '10 V6, then swapped up last summer to a '12 GT. I don't drive it hard, but I like to know I can if I want to. This car just feels 'right' to me. Love the styling. I do wish Ford would spend a couple hundred bucks per unit and get rid of the hard plastic door panels.

Thinking ahead, I'm not seeing much I like in the rumor mill about the next generation Mustang. Never liked the new Camaro, so they'll have to do a lot of 'body fixing' before I'd even look at it. I'd seriously consider a 2door Charger with MT, but that creature isn't here yet (SURELY they'll do one!).

At this point in my life, I can pretty much have what I want... so I'm always kinda looking.

I am 59. I bought my Mustang GT 6 years ago after putting my son through 4 years of college at UMass Dartmouth. He actually had one first (a laser red tricoat 2001 V6 Mustang), we bought it for him when he graduated from high school.

My Mustang is a toy... it stays in the padock during New England winters and stay inside when the weather is bad.

Since it's been 40 years since the 1970 RoadRunner I decided it was time for another example of Detroit muscle, so it was going to be Mustang or Camaro. After driving both and realizing that I couldn't see out of the Camaro's C pillars and that Chevy had done such an admirable job of tech and smoothness that I felt about as much connection as driving in a video game, the choice was simple. This is the first Mustang and only the second Ford I've owned in 45 years of driving. It sure beats that '82 Escort.

I always liked high performance cars, so when I got my actual job I started looking at Camaros, firebirds, BMW 325s and Mustangs. Got a great deal on my 94 GT back in 05 and plan on keeping it a long time. Would love to get a 2011+ later on

I always liked fast cars growing up, my dad had an original 5.0 from 83, I was 13 and he told me he'd give it to me when I turned 16... he didn't. He sold it and bought a Mercedes.

I've always wanted a mustang, unfortunately I was in debt with student loans and child support....

Now that I'm in my 40's I can afford one, almost bought a 12 in the summer of 2011, test drove it when my wife was looking for a car, but I had just bought a Nissan Altima the year before so I passed on it, but kept following the mustang (and the boss 302). I read about the changes for the 13 and had sold my self on getting a SBY boss.... well, one came in but the dealer wanted MSRP+10k - said no way and negotiated on a GHIG GT they had in the lot.

I don't regret it one bit, I'll probably track the car only a few times, and the GT has more comfort (love the comfort package in the winter!).

Glad I also joined up here, TMS is a great mustang community!

I'm 40 and I'm not particularly partial to brands. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. In order, I've had a 73 Nova SS 350, 68 RS Camaro 327, 2001 SS Camaro w/125 shot NOS, 93 Mustang Notchback 347 stroker with nitrous and now the 12'GT with Steeda tune & CAI.

I love the Zo6 Vettes but they're too " hey, look at me". I've had my butt handed to me by a few C6 Zo6's. They're sick cars especially if someone knows how to drive it.

53 here. You see the signature. I had my first Mustang when I was 17. I liked, and have stayed with them ever since.

Still like 'em.

I had a c5, a 2000 in melenium yellow. Took a five year loan on it and sold it three months after I paid it off. Then bought a gt 500 and sold it after I paid it off. Now I have a Leguna Seca but those new corvettes look pretty nice.

I'm just a month away from 73 and this is my first Mustang, my first domestic car in over 40 years, and the first new car I have ever ORDERED. I've driven Hondas for a little over 30 years and am selling my '07 S2000 to make garage space for the Mustang. The S2000 is a car I love to drive, but I realized I don't really like to ride in it. I'm slim, but it is still a bit cramped, and it rides like a real sports car.

I have loved the look of the recent year Mustangs and we rented one in Hawaii last November - a V6 convertible with the SelectShift automatic. I realized I could have a heck of a lot of fun and be comfortable at the same time. The details on the one I ordered (and will take delivery on in a few days) are below. I hope to autocross it as I did my S2000.

Well I am a few years older than you. Two weeks ago I picked up a 2011 RED GT C/S coupe and plan on using for weekend and local cruise nights.

Realize that this car appeals to young guys, however I feel young at heart and still love cars (Raised in Detroit).

Before buying this I was working on a deal with a guy for 2008 SRT8 Challenger since they are more retro and a bit bigger. The guy ended up being a jerk so I told him to keep it!.

Always liked Mustangs and the closest to owing one was a 1971 Merc Cougar XR7 with a 351. Still wish I had this one.

So if I show up at a cruise and someone eye ***** me for being old in a hot Red Mustang, they can just kiss my wrinkled butt!

PS: I appreicate being on a forum that has all ages and backgrounds.

Regards,
Jake 80

Classic stang talk, got it. But before I tell story, I will say this about 'why'...

Because.

Expanding on that: Because they fit my wants and needs. I like simple, I like their ride, I like their steering, I like their looks... I just like them.

So yeah, "Because." That's the why of it for me.

---

My first car ever was a '78 Mustang II V6 4Sp Hatchback in Orange. I miss that piece of junk all the time. it looked good, but it seriously wasn't a very good example of Ford engineering. Paint held up though. I was hooked at that moment. Mustangs and me were a thing I kept coming back to after that.

Next Mustang I got was an 86 SVO, because I just always wanted one. Wasn't the best choice, it turned out, as a daily. Kinda got expensive, and parts were harder to get... Had to let it go.

During that time, I also acquired what became Muskrat, the '66 Sprint Coupe that I restomodded. I miss THAT car a metric ton. Terribly, I feel, that I sold her, and her ultimate fate... It bothers me to this day, which is why I now have, finally...

Awesome. Me and this car will never part, at least, not on my end. I will put engine, trans, interior, paint, whatever she needs, she will get. I will NEVER EVER let her go willingly.

That's not to say that, if it were to unfortunately come to pass, some other person uses their car or other means to destroy my beloved pony (but not me, I'd hope) I would have to let her go, but I ain't planning on it.

I won't say I'd like to be buried with her, but... it has crossed my mind. But that's silly talk, who does that?

/Well... this person did: http://www.wrdw.com/home/headlines/57818512.html

Smile Hi oldnjguy---

I hate to tell you but I'm 70 with a 16 year old brain in my head. Like you I had a Corvette C5 that I did like a lot. I used to track it and while the engine and transmission/ rear were bullet proof the rest of the car was starting to fall apart. I traded it on a Mini John cooper works that I tracked for 4 1/2 years with no problems. I would have kept it but the warranty ran out and an extended warranty was $3,500 for two more years.

I don't track or auto-X any more but I still wanted a car to fit my (16 year old brain) in my 70 year old body so I chose the best sporty fun car out there. A Focus ST. They were not out yet so I bought my 2012 3.7 V6 automatic Mustang MCA premium edition. They actually gave me more for the Mini JCW then I paid for it after owning it for 4 1/2 years. I got the extended warranty up to 60,000 miles or six years for $900.00 and my Ford dealer threw in a free Mustang cap & T'Shirt at no charge.

I'm sure happy that the Focus ST was not available because I really love my Mustang. I had a 1964 1/2 convertible bought new, A 1965 271 horsepower Hi-Pro that I used to drag race with. A 1967 also bought new. A bunch of performance and luxury cars and a couple of Van's and a few Harley Davidson's and Corvettes but now I have my 1988 Suzuki Samurai and my 2012 Mustang.

I only go to car shows now and I have won a $100 gift certificate at the American Muscle show in Pa. and I just got a Peoples choice award at a huge show in Orlando. ( out of over 500 car's entered)

I really like my Mustang and did the Magnaflow street axle-backs, An Airaid CAI, A CDC rear panel cover, Red Caliper covers, and a few other odd's & end's to get it the way I want it.

Here is my Candy red MCA When I got the people's choice award out of all of the over 500 Mustangs, And about 50 Fords I thought somebody made a mistake. But they told me I had the most votes from the people that were there. I guess i'm not the only one that loves my Mustang.
