The mid-pipe that you use will be determined by your mufflers. If you have straight through mufflers like Magnaflow, you want to go with an x-pipe. If you have chambered mufflers like Flowmasters, you want to go with an h-pipe.

If you go with an x, spend the extra money to get a Dr. Gas. You won't be sorry!!!

I agree with hats, Dr. Gas X-pipes are insane! make more power and have an amazing tone to them.

Btw, you can use any mid-pipe with any muffler... there are just certain combo's that sound better. Flowmasters w/ an o/r X-pipe is LOUD and obnoxious. but it has a certain sound that some people like. I have magnaflows with a O/R H-pipe (swapping to an X soon). It is different.

The reasoning behind my first comment is that a chambered muffler like the flowmaster will allow the h-pipe to equalize pressure between the two lines, even at higher RPMS, whereas with the straight through pipes, the h-pipe won't be very useful up high as it won't be able to equalize the pressure.

The x-pipe allows for scavaging, even at higher rpms as the previous exhaust pulse helps bring the next through. This scavaging is reduced if you have chambered mufflers blocking the flow.

That being said, you are correct, an x-pipe with flowmasters will sound very different than an x-pipe with magnaflows. FMs with an x have a rather tinny sound that gets enhanced if you have a bassani x (not a true x-pipe). Some like that sound, some don't.

You really can't go wrong either way. Get one you really like the sound of and you'll be very, very happy. Personally I love the sound my Dr. Gas with my straight throughs (Full Boar) -- very, very quite (more quiet than stock) when cruising, but as soon as I lay on it, it sounds very much like it belongs at Daytona rather than on the road, especially from 4,000-7,000 RPM (and that's without headers).

The one thing to remember, you'll might get droning with aftermarket pipes, especially if you go with a catted route.

I just heard a set of Flowmasters with an x pipe and it sounded great. These were on a Mach 1. I wonder how close to that sound it would be on my GT?
