Tune - the "What If" thread….

I guess I'm curious about the ramifications of going from the "safe in almost every condition" factory tune to one that is built around a fuel grade. It seems the stock tune keeps the engine happy at any throttle position regardless of octane. How do other tunes compare? What if I get a Steeda 91 tune for my car and I am unable to use anything other than 89 due to a local fuel shortage. What happens to the car?

Return it to stock to run the lower octane

ive ran a 93 tune with 87 like twice. once was when i pressed the wrong button and once when i let someone use my car and forgot to tell them to only use 93 and they filled it up with 87. nothing happened. ran normal just didnt have as much power until i put the 93 back in it.

if your knock sensors work then it shouldnt hurt anything. itll pull the timing. i wouldnt do it on purpose and i would drive it easy when you had the wrong fuel in it tho.

Cool. That's what I was getting at. If it responds like the stock tune in that regard, then I'd be comfy. I only run 91 here anyway. More of a just in case scenario.

In our tunes adaptive knock is still there but it wont compensate from 93 back to 87. More like 93 down to 91 to 89. You can’t leave the stock range in there and expect to have performance or consistency.

Best Regards,

TJ

I figure the 5-10 minutes to go from my 92 tune to the 87 is a lot easier than waiting for them to fix the motor because the stock timing parameters were taken out and you break something.
This is the reason my Tuner is in the car with me. Rides well in the Map Pocket behind the seat.

I get that the 91 tune and the other Steeda tunes do not bypass the ECUs safety net with respect to timing at etc, so I feel more comfortable. I do not have access to a datalogging device, so I have to go canned and hope for the best. I'll reach out ot you shortly, Tim.

Ken, thank you for your insight - I agree.
