Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson's action comedy "Starsky & Hutch" has renewed interest in 1974 Ford Torinos, but Hollywood's top car star is still the orange 1969 Dodge Charger the General Lee from "The Dukes of Hazzard."

"We thought the top choice would be the Batmobile, or maybe Tom Selleck's Ferrari from 'Magnum P.I.' We were surprised," said McKeel Hagerty, president of Hagerty Insurance, the Traverse City, Mich.-based firm that specializes in collector car insurance.

Hagerty Insurance surveyed car enthusiasts nationwide to determine the Top 10 television and motion picture car stars.

"Each of these vehicles not only played an integral part in a movie or TV show story line, but each possessed a unique character, an on-screen personality all of its own," Hagerty said Wednesday.

The Top 10 Car Stars list:
  1. "The Dukes of Hazzard," 1969 Dodge Charger General Lee
  2. "Bullitt," green 1968 Ford Mustang driven by Steve McQueen
  3. "Gone in Sixty Seconds," 1967 Shelby GT500
  4. "Back to the Future," 1983 DeLorean
  5. "Batman" TV series, Batmobile
  6. "Goldfinger," Aston Martin DB5
  7. "Smokey and the Bandit," 1977 Pontiac Firebird T/A
  8. "Herbie, the Love Bug," 1963 Volkswagen Beetle
  9. "Starsky and Hutch" TV series and "Starsky & Hutch" movie, 1974 Ford Torino
  10. "The Green Hornet" TV series, Chrysler Imperial Black Beauty

Anyone else notice that exactly half the cars on the list are Ford's or from companies owned by Ford Motor? In contrast there are two Mopars and one GM.

Speaking of personality...
Where's KITT? that car had it's own personality, could talk to you, could turbo-boost over trucks. no one could ever forget "super persuit mode"

If I ever have more money that I know what to do with . .

I have always wanted to take a 1977 Trans-Am/Firebird, i.e., Smokey and the Bandit, and put a 427 SOHC/t56 transmission in the thing! Instead of the 6.6 sticker on the hood scope I would have a 'Ford' Blue Oval!

Am I crazy?

I mean if people can put SBC in Ford Hot Rods :nono: , why not put the 427 in the Pontiac!

:worship: The General Lee :headbang:

It would've been cool if the Double Zero Mustang (and I don't mean a 2000 model) from the Dukes tv movie some how made it up there also.

Thank God there wasn't any Fast, and Furious on that list.
