switching wheels winter/summer

alot of people switch there wheels when the winter months approach back to stock rims. I was wondering if this is even necessary. Im talking about either chrome or black wheels since alot of people take them off winter months to put stock on then when march comes around they put the black or chrome back on.

I do it because I am protecting my investment from road salt and other elements of winter. Also, my wheels have summer tires on them. They don't work so well in the winter.

"Nice" as in it's nice to be able to run a set of less valuable wheels and tires when the road condition is more corrosive and abrasive. Not to mention that there is a greater chance of damaging the wheels and tires due to reduced traction level.

For some of us, it is necessity. For example, I don't own an all-season tire; my tires are either dedicated summer, dedicated winter, or a set of slicks. None of them work "year-round". So, it's necessary for me to switch

I actually backed down a size from 19's to 18's and went a little narrower on the tires (Blizzaks) for better traction in the snow. All season tires are fine if you plan to only drive on clean, plowed roads, but if there is ice, snow or even temps below 45 degrees for long periods of time, it is best to get a good set of full winter tires. It is expensive in the beginning, but having two full sets will be more economical in the long run, as your regular street tires will last much longer, as will your expensive wheels.
