i own a 95 GT with bout 123,000 miles on it. still running strong. ive added a set of frod racing 1 5/8 headers, bassani x pipe, and flowmaster catback system to the car. the next area i want to adress is my rear end. i want to upgrade to 3.73 gears, and to fix the nagging problems of doing one-wheel burnouts and leaving one tire mark (hey everyone leaves rubber sometime ) after a take-off. i know that a traction lock differential/posi rear is the answer, but i dont know much about gearing , so anyone who has a suggestion on a set up or some good (and budget minded) brands to go with. when i mentioned changing gears to my mechanic he said i would most likely have to change my axels too, is this true?
well anyone with experiance/knowledge of this please share, thanx
ps the car is a 5speed

im not so much an expert when it comes to rear gears myself so im not sure if changing the axels but i dont think you have to..when it comes to installation on rear gears ( 3.73 is prob what id do for the 5spd ) is what gets you, over here its around 200 or so for installation then of course more for trac-lock

You shouldnt have to change the axles if the gear is a similar size as the old one. By that I mean the package size. I dont really know of any brands for gears but rear some articles in MM&FF to see hwat others have used. You might also want to check out hotrod mag (or if worse come to worse you could check Super Chevy).

hotrod is right you dont have to change the axle if it is around the gears you want to go for.

3.73 are the popular choice for the 6. I've never heard of having to change the axle.

to get a 2 wheel burnout you need a posi, gears wont make a difference as in the amount of wheels turning, and you need to pull your carrier pin and remove the c clips to chnage the rear gears.
