My 2013 was Keyed
My 2013 was Keyed
Some dirtbag college student keyed my car. I say that, I'm a college student myself and live on campus, so I'm not sweating too much because I mentally prepared myself to have my car potentially get vandalized. An unbelievable amount of cars look like crap at my university, more so than at my previous college.
But my baby is just under 6 months old...too new for me to let her look like crap. I've attached a couple pics. The scratches aren't terribly deep, anyone have suggestions for how I should fix it, besides filing an insurance claim? I'm not going to waste an insurance claim on it if I don't have to, I'll pay out of pocket to have it fixed if I can buff it out and/or touch up paint.
I'm not sure I've ever introduced myself here, but I'm Danny, a 21 year old college kid. I work my tail off running my own photography business (dvsphoto.com), a magazine job and another hourly job. My dad still owns his first car, a '69 with a 302 dropped in. I come from an all-Ford family, for most of my dad's life he's owned multiple ponies. Right now it's just his '69 (un-restored
) and my mom's 2008 V6 convertible. I might be young, but from being around cars my whole life, I have a deep appreciation for them. I'm about to go into "the real world" and decided to purchase my girl this past summer as a birthday present to myself. Some days I wake up and go "god what've I done".
And I love this forum, I just wish I had more time to actually get involved in discussions here.
Many thanks for whoever can help. I keep telling myself it's just a car and trying to keep it in perspective, but there's no harm in wanting to keep it looking nice, is there?

Danny, that's terrible. Isn't it nice how someone works hard to get into something nice and appreciate it just to end up habit some piece of **** jackass try and ruin it for you. Anyway, I would just take her in for an estimate. Go to a reputable collision shop. Stay away from dealers, and people who try and do paint and body work on the side. Those two scenarios seem to never work out quite right, IMO. you didn't get the pictures attached so I don't know if it is repairable yourself.
Yeah the lid has a couple deep spots where you can tell he stopped the key and started again.
There is no blackout panel, it's just the trunk. I could add a panel and fix it real quick, but I don't really want to.
I have a very reputable body shop back home, I'll take it there when I'm back in a couple weeks. Small town, know the guy and he runs a great shop. But I know that painting it will be at least a few hundred ... might be worth insurance claim if the estimate is high.

Looks like some drunken idiot carved a swastika on your car. It's hard to have a nice car on a college campus as there are just too many drunks stumbling around especially on weekends. Some wasted loser probably sees this nice ride as something he can't have, yet anyway, and resents it. The biggest problem with having a nice car is protecting it. That's why I love my stinky little Focus. I can park anywhere and if somebody keys it I couldn't care less.

Well, there's still the issue of the top part of the trunk door.

The decklid scratch is a straight tape off and shoot to the top. Thanks to to lines of the trunk, spoiler, and rear window this is an easy area repaint.
You got lucky and unlucky. Had it been on the quarter panel that would have been costly.
That really sucks, I really don't understand people sometimes.
If you are going to wait a while to have it repaired you might try a mild cleaning wax and buff on the paint just to keep the rust off.
Good Luck, btw I believe in Karma and whoever did this will pay in one way or another, it can't be a very happy person who would do something like this.

That sucks. People are ****s. I had someone key up my door while I was parked at my own apartment not too long ago. I think it was around $700 worth of damage.
That's the thing about keying...It costs a good amount of money to fix, but not so much that it's worth using your insurance. Even with insurance, after deductible, you'll still mostly be paying out of pocket for about the same amount.

This sort of thing pisses me off. So many people exhibit such a disregard for others and the property of others. My car was never keyed, but it did get spray-painted once. Easier fix, but still a pain in the ***. Anyways, good luck with getting the scratches repaired.
I sense a future keying to my car because I have a couple people that hate me on campus but I park away from other cars and they don't know what I drive, I saw one of them one time and he had to pick up his jaw and I drove away and parked somewhere else. Ugh I wish I could put like a car cover or a blast shield around it, I hate parking it at school.
Thank god it was only the trunk, I mean I'd still be so furious but that panel can be replaced, maybe even the whole trunk? At least it's not along the whole car like my previous previous car.
