I have a question for all you guys and gals out there. If K&Ns act as a far superior filtration system why arn't they picked up by car manufactors? At least try to come up with the technology them selves. I'm sure they would love to have the mileage and HP numbers on the sticker.

By the way I love K&Ns and are truly better filters then stock ones. Maybe it's a stupid question just something that poped in my head on the drive home today. Pitty a man who is clearly losing is marbles.

Off the top of my head my guesses are:

- Cost of filter and ease of servicing
- If not done at the dealer you leave it in the hands of owners to properly reoil the filter --> bad idea
- Fear of oil gunking up the MAF
- Dependence on K&N for supply of filters into the future

Thats some good reasons.

I installed a K&N in my stang would it be in danger of having oil gunk up my system?

If you don't really over oil, I don't think there should be any problem whatsoever.

Maybe someone can enlighten me on this. I know about K&N filters but could never justify buying one. I'm not a track guy so whatever marginally miniful gains you get in performance are meaningless to me. The maintenance looks to be a pain. Why do you buy them? Oh, this is a serious question.

There isnt really alot of maintenace. You clean it oil it and put it back in the car. It will last as long as you have the car, and beats having to buy filters every time one gets used up

Depends on how much you drive the car and the environment you drive it. Do you live in a dusty/dirty/smog area or a utopia with clean air? Then there is Walgreens....

That determines how often you have to clean it and they do help on performance, a little on actual gas mileage, and if you factor in the long term cost of replacement filters they easily pay for themselves.

I actually like them and it will be one of the first mods I do to my Shelby next year ... that and lojack, alarm, NSA "Star Wars" satellite tracking system ... ok, maybe not the last part.

K&N is all I've ever used and all I will ever use. Just my personal preference. You could tell me I could get better gains with this or that, but I guess its just my familiarity with the brand and the love of having that red filter under my hood that keeps me hooked

I guess one way of saying it is: Garbarge In/Garbarge Out. That is somewhat too cynical but if your interested in performance, it starts with the filter...

I use K&N's in my 98 vert and in my Expedition. I don't do much dusty driving (dirt roads), and clean them once each spring. Cleaning is simple, but it's not quick.

Buy a K&N cleaning kit and use the solvent supplied to clean the filter. Rinse the solvent out. Then let the filter dry completely!

Oil the filter per the directions. Do NOT over-oil. This is how the MAF's are ruined.

Then let the filter air dry again for awhile before you put it back in the car.

Simple. Takes half the day, but it's easy...
