How long before an accident is reported to carfax

Depending on the insurance company and/or police department, it may never get reported. Everybody is downsizing these days, and reporting to Carfax is a luxury that can't be afforded now because of short staffing.
But when an accident is reported, I heard that the average time is around 3 months.
That's why it's never a good idea to rely solely on a Carfax when looking at a used car.

Excellent post ^^
It can take awhile (months) depending on who did what. While Carfax is an excellent tool to have in your buyer's kit in determining whether you should get a car or not, it is not a bible of accuracy in every instance. My favorite Carfax story involved an air-cooled 90's 911 that showed a clear Carfax. Fortunately the owner advised the next buyer that the car was in a serious accident that required over $25k in work. Yeah, prices are high for Porsches, but $25k worth wasn't a fender bender.Honesty is rare in the used car world which means if you have doubt about a car being in an accident, or flooded, or whatever, take it to your favorite body shop (or to one with a good reputation). The fee they charge to verify is well worth it.
