I live in NJ and have yet allow one person to fill up my Mustang. Hers's the majority fo reactions I get when I pump my own:
80%: They don't careor give me a bewildered look and walk away.
10%: Act like they're doing me a favor by letting me pump it and ask me a few questions about the car.
10%: Actively fight me and try to wrench the pump away. It's at this point I usually tell them to get their manager, and while they're doing that, I pump it myself anyway.
I will not allow anyone to pump gas into my 2005 Mustang GT or my 1967 Shelby GT 500. It will never happen. My fist and their mouth will have a long hard discussion about that if they can't comprehend it.
Harley bikers come into NJ stations all the time and pump their own fuel, no questions asked. You know why? Because the gas jockeys are intimidated by them. So as long as they're just a little afraid of me, they'll let me be.
I notice 99% of the 10% who try to stop me from pumping are either kids who are jealous of the car or old domestic men who despise their job in the first place. So they feel the need to "assert" themselves and make themselves seem important and in a position power, as most guys their age are in a much more comfortable position than they are.
If an officer happened to try and ticket me, I would gladly accept it. It's around $30. Better to pay $30 than allow some punk to dent/scratch my car. Besides, I would hire a lawyer and fight it to the death.
On a similar note, I just returned from CT, and I saw something VERY interesting: ou can either pump the gas yourself OR get full service, but the full service gas price was .25 HIGHER! It was $2.75 for self-serve and $3.00 for full service!!! God, we'd be close to $2.00 a gallon in Jersey if we could self-serve! Socialist bastards!!

retarded man, I'm so glad I can pump my own. Rarely ever seen someone else come out and do that around here, dunno even if they do that full service around here either. I know when I was a kid they use to have that.

When I lived in northern Massachusetts a few years ago we had the same law...the stations had to pump the gas into your vehicle. It sure seemed really weird as I hadn't seen full serve stations since the 70's. Must be a northeastern thing maybe?

But yeah, I understand people not wanting anyone near their cars. I have at least 4-5 people a day who, when they learn that it's full service, drive off and go somewhere else. But I have even more people who are thrilled not to have to do it themselves. That sucks about New Jersey, though. I couldn't imagine being prohibited by law from filling your tank!

I worked for a full service station part-time while attending college. I always treated my customers and their vehicles with the utmost respect, no matter what they drove. I dont ever recall having to "wrestle" with a hose. This guy must have been an idiot, or just did'nt care.

Yeah, i remember my 1st trip to NJ. Went to a gas station and had assigned jobs to my buddies. I was to fill up, one guy to wash the windows, and the other to go over the car making sure everything was in order. We pull in like a Tony Stewart pit crew and some guy comes flying out telling me i can't pump the gas. I look at him and start laughing telling my other friends, "Hey, you believe this guy? Say's i can't pump the gas." Gas station attendant replies: "Oh, you guys are from NY eh?" With that, he lets me pump the gas but explains to me it's a law in that state. I thank him for the quick law lesson, pay him, and we're off.
There are 3 facts about NJ i learned that day:
1. You can't pump your own gas
2. You can't buy beer at a 7-11 or wawa....you have to go to a liquor store
and 3. You can't make a left turn in the entire state of NJ !!
Weird, just plain weird.
Oh, and one other thing i'm not sure of but.......are there any topless places in the state? We went to one but the girls had on bikini tops that they never removed! What a waste of $$$

That's one reason I will never live in New Jersey...no gas jockey will ever have the pleasure of sticking that fuel nozzle into any of my babies....New Jersey needs to wake up and offer self-serve to those who want it...get out of the "dark-ages!" Same goes for Oregon!
P.S. I even rented an Infiniti G35 for my last recent visit to Atlantic City...and sure enough some fuel jockey on the expressway rammed that nozzle into the car and worked on two other cars...I was waiting for that fuel nozzle to fall out and scratch the car and I would have let him have it...
Again, New Jersey get yourself out of the dark ages...people can certainly pump their own gas (and for those too lazy to do it themselves you can still offer them the option of full service).
