Dash cams

Anybody else have a dash cam? I know mine would have saved my ***. A "witness" told the cop I was showing out getting sideways in the road lol. Anybody have a similar experience?

I don't have one. But I am very much considering, just for the reason you mentioned. Seems like just because we have exciting, nice looking, powerful cars, it is easy for the blame to come back here. That is even when the other driver is really the cause. Could be too much rubber necking I suppose.

Could some of you share what to look for in a setup, and what brands, specs, etc...

Love to see what was done for a nice install.

I'll post a few pics the dash cam I have is nice very good video day and night. They only problem was I left it in the window and the glue holding it together failed and plastic warped. It still works tho lol but defiantly don't leave it overnight unless you have a garage. Their are a bunch to chose from got mine from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00N8B...aSL&ref=plSrch this one it is pricey the video is on par with go pro. Wish I could post video to show you guys I don't do YouTube. Maybe I can do a screen shot?

Great quality pics. So that little Saturn pulled right out into you. All ok? Saw a post of yours about the CarFax issue. All ok now?

I will have to check out that camera. Price looks ok.

Yea everything is ok with the car fax. Alabama doesn't allow first party diminished value claims so I'm stuck with that. no stealer ship would give me over 20k for my car.

The issue I have is that no one seems to make a tiny dash cam. They all have LCD screens and a ton of crap I don't need. I just want something tiny that I can hide out of sight, that will record the past 1-2 hours of my driving in 720p or better resolution and save to an SD card. I don't need an LCD screen, I don't need it to do ANYTHING other then record video/audio while my ignition is on.

Some of these look just as big as the rear view mirror.

have you seen the video evidence to any police officer in your insurance company you can clearly tell the Saturn is it fall as you are going right-of-way , so in a sense I guess from the sounds kind of you you were going sideways the correct way of traffic

I love dash cams period...especially when someone backed into me once and claimed I hit them....I just showed the video to the officer that showed up and well the rest was history and the idiot to say the least got a fat ticket, insurance report made against them (police report also stated clearly what they did) and nailed for reckless driving on top of the moving violation ticket and public endangerment charges.....(yes the police here don't f*ck around....)

oh and I do install them in every vehicle I own....

Yep other wise they probably would have said it was your fault. for what a good one cost it will more than pay for itself. If not catching your accident also works great for security when your parked. The main reason I got mine was to prevent insurance fraud. Some of those bastards do it for a living.

Great thread, I've been debating getting a cam for my car, but after reading this thread I'm definitely going to pick on up. A lot of great advice!

I've been thinking of getting a car cam for some time now.
I may splurge and buy myself one for Christmas. We'll see. I've been looking at the GoPro Hero only because of proven video and audio quality. (This is their basic model, but for what I'm using it for, it works perfect.)
It's really not that bad of a price for what you get, minus SD card. Plus, you can download their GoPro studio software which is free for easily importing your content, and create engaging GoPro-style videos to share.

Anybody know anything about the Cobra Drive HD Dash Cam? Costco has it for about $80. I know there are a lot of cheapies out there, but not sure I want to take the chance and throw the $50-$60 buck out. With Costco it can go back easily if I don't like what it does.

Here is the link to Costco page...
http://www.costco.com/Cobra-Drive-HD...100223046.html

If your a member you can see the price.

They also have one of the GoPro's, not sure which one, for around $250.

The GoPro I am looking at is the entry level, it isn't really that expensive and I'm sure it is better than most out there for being an "entry level" cam.
This is the one I am looking at;
http://shop.gopro.com/cameras/hero/CHDHA-301.html

I just watched a Youtube video on it and seems really good for the price. Still need to add the SD card, which isn't that much and I think the suction cup, which I don't know how much that will set you back. (You can always get a SD card from Amazon.com to save some money. You may even be able to find the suction cup there as well for less.)

I have a front dash cam and also a rear one on my car. When researching them I looked into the GoPro. Some disadvantage of the GoPro is it's not specifically designed for this purpose so you don't get video looping (1,3 or 5 min video chunks) and auto erase when the SD card is full so you'll have to format your SD card manually anytime it fills up. I don't think you can wire it to a 12v source so it won't power on and off automatically. Also G-Force activation and a few other things. As far as video quality any dash cam worth it's weight is going to be comparable to the GoPro.
The advantage of the GoPro is you can use it for so many other things and who doesn't like a GoPro.
I went with a Falcon Zero F170 in font and a capacitor based (no battery) Auto-Vox B40-C in the rear. A battery based dash cam will screw with the battery if you leave it mounted in the summer months if the temperature gets around / above 130 F. I wanted something in the rear that was stealthy and did not have to be removed. I remove the front camera if I'm parked in the summer sun for a semi long period like work or if I'm in a not so great area of town since I don't want my windows smashed so they can grab the camera.
I was surprised how well the rear camera records through my rear window being that it's "lemo" tinted on the outside. Here's a 1 minute video of the rear. It looses a little quality via YouTube. In the actual video you can read the plate of the car behind me pretty easily.

And here's a short video from the front camera (I was running the AC at max so you're hearing the air coming through the defrost vents)
