Big Move for Me

Well that was it. I just got my last USPS mail delivery in Texas. Shipped my car to Wake Forest, NC last week. I'm closing on my house next week and will be in NC on the 29th I think.

Welcome to NC. Good luck with everything. I'd like to say hello but Wake Forest is about 3 hours away. I saw a football game between the Demon Deacons and FSU about 10 years ago and the ride was long. Of course you will eventually visit the nation's first Krispy Kreme too in Winston Salem.

congratulations on the move!

is NC still a nice and affordable place to live? I think I might move down there (from Massachusetts) when I retire in a year or two. I know it was relatively affordable in the past, but I think that might have changed in recent years?

Of course I would be staying away from the liberal strongholds, that's why I want to leave Mass .... I hear Ashville is a lost cause now, LOL

Yeah, Asheville is the San Fran of NC. It's really strange how it exists in the middle of this ultra strong Republican region. It wasn't that way when we moved to western NC in 2002 but it evolved somehow into a far left mess over the 23 years we have lived here..
NC is quite affordable or we would be in trouble financially. It's just the rural sections though as the bigger towns of Charlotte, Raleigh etc are not cheap.
Our 1600' 2 bedroom 3 bath home is on one acre here in Macon County NC and the property taxes are under $1,000 per year still. Electric for us is almost always under $200 per month. The state income tax isn't too bad and we pay about $1,000 on my $40,000 pension. No tax on Social Security.
This is our home in the Fall season after I took a drive in the R/T last year. It isn't fancy but perfect for the two of us. Feel free to PM me if you truly intend to move here. Glad to assist.

Thanks NC, that's what I needed to hear. And that looks like a place I would be happy to live. No serious plans right now and it looks like it might be a while, in addition to retirement I also have elderly parents who live here in Mass who need my help for a while. Will look you up if and when we get serious about it!

Glad I am done with moving -- I think. Spent 30yrs in the military and moved 14 times...that's 14 times I got my household goods packed and shipped...twice overseas, the rest in the states.

No fun, that's for sure. Moving is so disruptive and time consuming, never mind the expense!
In my married life of 48+ years, we have moved too many times. The first one was a great move though as we moved out of a cheap rental in Florida to our first home in 1979. About 8 years later we 'built' our first home getting into a better neighborhood. Then 2 more stupid moves, for no reason to be honest, until our last move 23 years ago to retire here in NC. No desire to move once we got here and I'd like to keep it that way.

We moved into a house when we married 52+ years ago. Then after a couple of years we moved out of southern CA to Copenhagen for a year. We settled in WA and built a house we had pretty much designed while in Copenhagen and were in it for 20 years, then moved to a different house for another 20. We moved to Frisco, TX 8 years ago to be near our granddaughter and now have 2 near us. I hope to be where we are now until I move out in a pine box.

Ya I guess I am. I was going to go to a car show in Youngsville but it rained. Rains here more than Texas that's for sure. Funny thing is that this year it's cooler where I was than here this last couple weeks. But looking at the forcast that is going away for sure. Love the trees. Western NC driving through was awesome but wow, I thought Texas had Kudzu?

^^^ Cool that you are already talking car shows. Yes, the heat this year is quite intense. My wife and I are from Florida where we lived our entire lives and this recent weather, especially the humidity, is quite similar. One of the hotter summers in our 23 years here. No relief here in the mountains either unless you get above 3,000'.
We all wish you the best here in NC.

Cool. I used to live in McKinney in Stonebridge Ranch. I had to get that need to own some property so I moved out to a small ranch outside Hico, TX. My suggestion? Dont go there.

Yes that comes with the job I guess. Thank God we're done with that.
