Although I ONLY have a 2004 V6 Anniversary Edition Mustang (Red of course!!!) I'm dying to get a 1967/68 GT Fastback. I can't afford to drop 40K on a restored car without having my wife pulling a Lorraine Bobbit on me. In reality, that kind of price is out of my budget (wife, two kids, mortgage, etc...).

Obviously the only way I'm going to get my hands on a 67/68 fastback is to get an unrestored car . What can $15-17K get me, and what advise can you give me? How much would it cost (if I spread the cost out over 3 or 4 years the wife tends not to notice the total amount) to have a car in "that price league" restored to a stock car. I'm not Mr. Mechanic so someone would have to do all of the work for me.

Any advise (other than to kill myself) would be greatly appreciated....

You should be able to get a very good 67/68 fastback for that price.

Two years ago my mom bought a 65 convertible fully restored for 16,500.

Check out the results from the Barret Jackson Auction on their hompage to see what some sold for. Of course you will see a CJ Fastback that sold for over 500,000 but there will be some that were fairly priced.

Found one after 2 mins of seacing and over 680 Mustangs were sold at that auction so there are plenty more:

This is a 67 fastback that sold for less than 16,000. Hope this helps.

You'll have to excuse me, I new to this and still very much a novice. This auto auction thing scares me a little. Don't want to drop a lot of money and beat.... have to figure out how to do this thing.....

e-bay is sometimes good and sometimes bad, Check it out a lot before putting any money on it, even if you can touch it, Check vin and title and owner ID.
Just about any big city newspaper also has a antique section in there auto classifieds. Some good deals can be had there.

IMO, not much. The main problem is rust. Floor pans and the body are usually repaired because they are visible. The cowl and chassis are usually not.

To receive good advice you might like to explain what you are trying to accomplish, what level of quality do you expect (ride quality, performance, handling), your experience with old cars, mechanical talents, maximun available funds (just in case) ect, ect.

I dunno fastbacks....even beat ones are still pricey in this area...you will probably end up spending as much on a restored one from the get go after its all said and done restoring one yourself.
Take into account all the extra money being spent on labor alone if you cant do the work yourself....paint, assembly, etc.
I was going to get a 67 fastback until I realized how much it was going to cost me and I dont even have many bills.
