Convertible top handle storing position

Hi! My name is Joe. Own a 2009 Mustang convertible. Need help in telling me how to position convertible top release handles, when lowering top. Manual is vague on this. I have been closing handles flat, when I put the top down. Would really appreciate help.! Thanks folks!

I honestly never thought about and simply leave the handles in the open/released position when lowering it. No issues after 5 years, so I assume this is correct.
