I was driving the car home when I got it and all of a sudden it sounded like someone was under the car beating the hell out of it with a hammer...I towed it the rest the way home and it still made that noise..I jacked both back tires up in the air and when I spin the tires it sounds like someone is beating the inside of the diff with a hammer... is my gears broke or my axle broke.... hope you guys can help
Ok, so the reality is it's the entire axle right now. You know it's in the housing, so that's all you need to know. An axle, new/reman or used, seems to be about $1000 or more, although I saw a few on ebay for 600 or whatever. Or you might can find one at a salvage place, but that'll be easy 800+. Or you might can take it to a (semi)local axle rebuilder. Or you could rebuild it yourself, that's a thing.
The entire thing is this: It's already broken. You *cannot break it further*. This is important to note and take heed of so you can take action.
Which is this: Take the differential cover off (have a big catch pan to catch the fluid) and get in there and figure out what happened. Only then would you know what is needed, and what you feel you need to do. Worst case scenario is you put the diff cover back, and have it fixed or sell the car for scrap. Because the value of a GT is not really all that much these days, and less so if it's broke, so... yeah.
Probably not what you want to hear. But it's what I'm 'hearing' given your description, and I'd be somewhat surprised if it was something else. Not completely, because Stranger Things(C/R/TM), but it seems to be the thing. I mean, if the car doesn't go, but tires spin by hand... definitely a disconnection in the axle seems most probable...
Thanks guys for the info...I took my car to pb performance and it's the gears.. they are going to put a new set of 3.55 gears in for me for 600 bucks and get it back on the road

Glad to see your got it figured out. A little late to the game but welcome and looking forward to the pics of the gears, like houtex said. Just curious to what the look like all busted.
Sorry guys I didn't get time to take the pics of the gears, my wife had to go to the hospital she had a bad seizure and the shop come got the car today but the only thing in there that looked messed up was the pinion gear and the diff has some grooves cut in it
Yeah she doing ok ..... she will have a bad one every now and then and she will have to go to the hospital and they really wear her out and make her really tired and exhausted feeling... thanks for the concern guys....
