I got hooked up to *** cable internet, I get an annoying notice each time I log on, I guess I don't have an anti-virus program and until I get one I'll get the notice. Any advice on cheap/free programs that have worked for you?

here's a website with a bunch of anti-virus programs you can download. some of them are free, and some you get for a few days as a free trial...

http://www.download.com/sort/3150-2239_4-0-1-3.html?

download Avast and the free trial of AVG... its worked pretty worked for me, although it only lasts 30 days its better than nothin

also, definately get some spyware protection if you have high speed. adaware is a good free program but spysweeper is better, catches things adaware doesnt.

My computer repair man turned me on to this spysweeper software. After the free trial I bought it. I also purchased there Firewall.

As for virus software I have Norton and I renew for the updates once a year like $15. I did not have to purchase the software though, repair man loaded it one time after he worked on my computer.

I uninstall all the crapola software I can find with uninstallers. Then, I use Ad Aware. And then I use SpyBot. Then, for trouble childrens, I use Hijack This. That one's not very user friendly in terms of protecting the computer from the ignorance of the user, myself included. LSPFix awaits for troubled Winsock stacks, ditto on the ignance factor tho.

Usually kills it all dead, and the internet is clean for all of 4 minutes...

Norton AV all the way, though. I think that Viruses are the least of the worries nowadays, compared to all the ad-tro-mal-spyware being spewed about. Many days I spend doing the mal-ad-spy-trojanware cleanup cause their "computer just got slow all of a sudden, and now I'm getting pop-ups." 3 weeks later they tell me, of course. Funtimes.

"Your computer has 73285 Tro-ad-mal-spywares"

"Whoa! That is not a low number! That is a big number! And now the Compy has peed the floor...."

I think one should add ZoneAlarm or an actual hardware router in the mix. Direct connect broadbands to the computer is a :nono: What's an extra route?

I think RR finally uses router/modems so that's a help....

Ah, this post felt nice. I dunno, it's like a clearing of my mind or some other silliness... Laters.
