EDINBURG — Excessive speed may have caused a car crash that killed a McAllen Memorial High School freshman Tuesday night.
Armando Acosta, 15, a passenger in a Pontiac Firebird, was thrown from the vehicle after it rear-ended a Chevrolet Blazer near the intersection of 10th Street and University Drive in Edinburg, police said. The Blazer rolled over, while the Firebird spun around several times before hitting a tree.
Another 15-year-old passenger in the Firebird was taken to Rio Grande Regional Hospital with severe head injuries. Two other 15-year-olds riding in the Firebird and the driver of the Blazer were taken to area hospitals but did not suffer serious injuries.
Police are still investigating the accident, but believe alcohol wasn’t a factor, said Edinburg Assistant Police Chief Peter de la Garza.
The unidentified driver was not old enough to have a license, and Acosta may have been ejected from the vehicle because he was not wearing a seatbelt, de la Garza said. He said the speed limit on that part of University Drive is 55 mph.
Acosta’s mother, Sonia, last saw him around 2 p.m. Tuesday, about five hours before the accident. He was enjoying winter break, which for McAllen schools began Dec. 15.
"He said to his mother that he was going to his friend’s house," said Juan Corona, the mother’s boyfriend.
Corona described Acosta as your typical student, one who liked to play pool and box.
"He was pretty active, hanging around with his sisters, playing his Xbox, kidding around with his mother," Corona said.
Acosta’s funeral service is set for 1 p.m. today at De Leon Funeral Home in Pharr.

I agree, but those of us who are still alive are likely more intelligent about not smashing into stuff than such good examples of intelligence. It sucks that the kid croaked, too bad he didn't have a chance " to learn from his mistakes" as most of us have.
Sorry to hear.

Thanks guys, I posted this so that you all can understand what happens when an underaged person drives a sports car, guys don't make this same mistake with your kids. This is like the fourth time in the valley that a case like this happens. The others dealt with street racing (ricers obviously)
