Well my TiVo Finally died yesterday.

It had been freezing up and dying for weeks now. Finally crapped out..

I replaced it with a DirecTv Dvr. I think I hate it.

Anyone else have one or the other?

TiVo is like air, so I HAVE to figure out how to record my shows.

I directv DVR with TIVO. I have never had a stand alone unit. I love mine and have it on every TV.

There is a place you can get replacment hard drives for your TIVO that broke. I used them before. DVR Repair

I've had a total of 3, 2 Series 1 and 1 Series 2. Currently I have the S2 set up on the cable box and the S1 set up on a raw cable feed. Both have upgraded hard drives for an average of 200 hours on each.

For the S1 I bought a hard drive over the internet to upgrade it, for the S2 I bought the software and made the drive myself (MUCH Cheaper).

I just saw last night where they now have an S3 unit with dual tuners, kinda pricey offer for us since they are lumping in a years worth of service, but it comes out to be about the same. 250 is just a lot to pay when I got my S2 after rebates for 50 bucks(40 hour unit) Think I paid another 100 for the replacement drive at Best Buy. Once the S3's hit the shelves they'll be offering rebates and what not and I read you'll be able to get a 40 hour unit for $99.

April, I'm with you, I'll never do without my Tivo. When people ask me what night a show comes on, I look at them with shock and say"how would I know, I have Tivo!"

I have a dual tuner DVR from my cable company. It's great. I work alot of evenings so I don't miss what I want to see. The main reason was so I didn't miss 24, but I found I use it more than I thought I would. The only problem is Hi Def hogs alot of hard drive space, does Tivo record Hi Def ?

TIVO does not have a HI DEF unit yet, that'll be the S3 I believe, which is still in the works.

Why not use a computer and run something like SageTV (what I use) or BeyondTV or Windows Media Center or MythTV (linux folks represent). Doesn't have a monthly fee either and I know at least SageTV will handle hi-def signals. Just a thought.

I haven't tried it lately, but a couple of years ago the quality was poor when I tried the home pc route. Now I'm assimilated into the TIVO mindset.

Anyone that might be interested....

I work for Comcast Cable in New Jersey and we're going to be testing Panasonic and Samsung HDTV dual tuner DVR's with software that was written by Tivo. So you'll get the best of both worlds....or at least that's the idea!

P.S. if anyone lives in Southern New Jersey and has an account with Comcast, let me know....I have a special TMS discount for you, if you know what I mean....

Its been a week. My opinion:
I think the DirectvDVR Sucks. A lot! And the Saxophone playing cartoon on the XM channels is stupid.

We cleaned out our TiVo- apparently they get dirty like computers. It hasn't locked up once since. I am thinking about ditching the DVR and going back happy. I love my TiVo.

Besides, The Monkees and the last episode of third watch are stored in my Tivo hard drive.

My main advocation of computer based PVR software is that there is NO monthly fee.

Ahh Sweet Hades. I have my Tivo back.
Turns out it was not broke, it just needed a blast with the air hose like a PC ,the air intake was clogged with dust. It was overheating and locking up.

The DirecTv DVR is a piece of crap!!
