If it were out in the yard- give it ten feet or so.........All creatures out there get to live in peace. My immediate hanging out area- my back porch, front porch and flower gardens+garage....must be things that can kill me free- I killed 3 black widows out there too.
It was killed instead of ignored because it struck at me when I walked outside, then it waited and struck again when my hubby opened the door to see what I was curled up in a ball hysterical and screaming about.
That is also the door my children use to take the dog out, and the door they leave out of to go play in.
Heres my handy little illustration

I remember last year, when I was outside, my father came out with his $1400 Grundig shortwave radio in his hands, and stepped on a step currently being housed by a 6 foot black snake. Scared the crap out of him. I could see the thing from about 60 feet away... But, two or three shots from the .22 gave it a nice scar. :P
Copperheads are not very aggressive, especially at night when there is no sun to keep it warm. It was most likely lethargic and just got scared of you. You can more often then not pick them up without incident. They are no where near as willing to bite as some species of rattlers or water moccasins (cotton mouths to you hillbillies) which are extremely pugnacious and will actually give chase to you.
I was out looking for snakes once many years ago and saw a nice reddish gold snake half under a pile of leaves. There was no rattle and it wasn’t a water moccasin so I assumed it was a rat snake and picked it up. A few moments later I noticed the pits under its eyes and realized what it was. It was a little of 3 feet long and had plenty of time to bite me if it had wanted to but it didn’t. I just let it go and figured I was lucky.
Last year I spent a week in SC at Myrtle Beach and was out messing around by a little pond area looking for gators and turtles to take pictures of and I ran into another one. Stupid me, forgetting what happened a few years before, picked it up without thinking again (plus I was a little drunk). Just like last time, I realized what it was a got a good hold of it, but it never even attempted to bite.
I have picked up water moccasins and eastern diamond backs before, and those suckers want to bite you in a bad way. They get pissed off really easy.
If a water moccasin did bite you and were less than 100lbs, you could get a nasty wound and some hemorrhaging around the bit area enough to need medical attention. Small kids and old or infirm people just need not take the chance. If you are a big or healthy male, you would almost certainly survive the bite without medical intervention (but you should still get it). These creatures have far far less potent of a bite then any other venomous snake species indigenous to the USA other then the Cat Eyed Snake, which is only really found in southern Texas here and has fangs in the back of its mouth, not the front, so they are not really designed to bite large prey. Odds are with them you wouldn’t even get envenomated.

Um.....April. I would be careful about posting pixs like that. Seriously. I'm not sure what the law is in Alabama but here in TN it's against the law to kill a snake.
Anyway. On that note. I am glad that you got him before he bit you.

Eww I was down in the wash this morning snooping on the new house behind me. I forgot about the freaker- I looked down and he was dried into the mud down there. GROSS!
I got a shovel and a hoe waiting if his family needs deliverance.
