HEY- has anyone ever smelled Mothballs?
HEY- has anyone ever smelled Mothballs?

How long will it last?
April, it made the first move. It got what it deserved.
Killing a dangerous snake on your patio is not the same as killing a snake while hiking in the woods.
I would have done the same thing.
looks like a few pics are no longer there. I saw a spade shovel. That was the murder weapon
According to your drawing that snake was several feet from your "personal space"
Glad I don't live near you. If I rang your doorbell and startled you I'd be a dead man

I took em off.......
I didn't kill it with anything- my husband cut its head off with a shovel.
Here is the killing ground..........
Its also where I blasted a black widow(one of 3 to date). This place is freaky.

Since you're in a new development, you're probably going to have to keep your eyes open for a while, probably until after all the construction is done and over and maybe a year or so after to give everything time to move out/be killed.
Don't keep anything that a snake can easily hide under around, like wood piles and the such. And don't feed the dog or cat outside, they'll likely spill some food, which may attract critters that snakes will want to eat, which will mean snakes will come to you.
It was probably on your porch for the added heat reflecting off the concrete. Learn, if you don't know already, what snakes are in the area and which are venomous and which aren't. Best bet would be to leave the non-venomous ones alone, if they are there, there is probably something they want to eat, like mice, and if they are there trying to eat it is unlikely that a venomous snake will also be there - probably not enough food to support both. Better to have a non-venomous snake that will likely run from you and your kids and animals than a venomous snake that'll be a bit braver and may sit there and wait to bite.
Be safe.

Reminds me of when I was young. Had an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake almost bite my cousin. If you don't know, those are the biggest poisonous snakes in the U.S. and can do some serious damage.
Was visiting my grandmother in Florida. At the time she lived in a house that backed up to some woods. My Dad, Uncle and my cousin went out in the woods looking for snakes, didn't succeed but when they came back into the yard, my cousin suddenly started yelling. He had almost stepped directly on one that was all coiled up, but at the last moment noticed and jumped over it. It was probably sleeping, but raised its head and started rattling. That things head was bigger than my fist, maybe 5-6 inches wide. Really thick body. My memory doesn't serve me too well, but 6-8 feet long. Anyway since its head was raised my Dad used the walking stick he had taken from the woods and whacked it, and whacked it, and whacked.
They skinned it in the driveway that night, don't know what happened to the skin.

Eww.
Apparently we have a "snake" problem. Animal control was out discussing it with the HOA yesterday. NICE. I also live not very far from a lake- Its behind the houses on the main road, which is 2 houses from me.
I have not spent too much time out in my backyard- I spent more in the front now.
I bought mothballs and rolled them down the bank that leads to the snake water. THEN I limed my lawn.
Sadly- Construction here will not be complete for years yet.
So things will be getting disturbed for a long time yet. This is sposed to be one of those MEGA developments, and they still have one phase and a school to build yet.
As well, We have coyotes in the woods behind us- I don't mind Coyotes though-I enjoy listening to them.
I wouldn't kill a garter snake, or black snake or chicken snake- but we also have rattlers, and Copperheads and cottonmouths- which all suck.
I have nothing outside- just a hummingbird feeder. No Bird seed, no wood piles(gas fireplace)...just grass, no trees even.

Um.....April. I would be careful about posting pixs like that. Seriously. I'm not sure what the law is in Alabama but here in TN it's against the law to kill a snake.
Anyway. On that note. I am glad that you got him before he bit you.

Not in Bama.........Too many of the friggers to worry about- and copperheads are too plentiful to be endangered.
If I saw a gator in my yard, I would get so scared I would probably be in Mental Lockdown.
That freaking snake still has me scared to go out on the back porch after dark. I keep thinking his relatives(and you know he had em) are out for revenge.
Anyhow- I don't anticipate more snakes. The bank going down to the wash is filled with mothballs and the yard is filled with 40 pounds of lime-as are my neighbors. Snakes don't like either of em.
