Rise in gas prices, are we at 1973 again?
I remember fillling up my 1968 tank in 1975 ( I got my license) and paying less than .50 cents a gallon. The oil embargo killed the performance cars by 74. Are we reliving history? or is this just a short term.
I wonder if when the crisis is over, will the price go down to just over 2.00 a gallon. I think of the FX movie...oil storm. Life parrell movies?

All I know is that I'm glad I have a V6 now with 23.4 Average miles per gallon.
Hang in there GT owners we'll get out of the woods soon enough. :usa:

That's funny cuz I get an average of 23.0 miles per gallon to and I have a GT
I tihnk it's funny when people get the V6 for "improved gas mileage." But I'm not in here to start a fight over that. Mustang is a mustang. If the oil crisis happens again, I'm hanging on to my car like grim death. I wasn't alive during the last crisis, but if it killed the muscle car market...I don't tihnk it will happen again. We love our mustangs too much now.
They are not eve close. This whole spike (not counting the recent spike due to the Huricanne) is being caused by speculation in the oil markets, not some kind of oil embargo.
The other thing that is hurting GAS prices is the lack of sufficent refinery capacity (no one can burn crude oil...). We haven't built a new refinery in over 20 years in the USA. How much has demand gone up? And yes, they HAVE expanded existing refineries, but there is only so much you can do before you need to create a new refinery. We are past that point.
Adding to the misery is the EPA: they have specific formulation requirements for different regions. There are over 40 different formulas required around the country. This is plan stupid! When you have to have the refinery configured a specific way to product the gas for a specific region, then when a refinery producing fuel for one region has excess capacity, they STILL can't help out the regions that need extra capacity. The EPA needs to get off their butts and define maybe three different clean air grades of gas (not counting regular, plus, premium as "grades" in this case!). There can be the super clean version for the worse places, a clean formula for areas that need a some help and the regular formula for most of the country that does not have air quality issues. But no. They have to have 40 specific versions... Think about how much ice cream would cost if the FDA mandated 40 different versions depending on where you lived. And they hadn't been able to build any more ice cream factories in the last 20 years.
This will blow over. The refineries will come back online and the platforms will start producing again. Heck, it is even possible that there will be enough outcry over the current prices that new refineries will be approved and the EPA might even be forced into "cleaning" up it's act. Who knows?

The current spike is internal to our refining capacity. It is not an external supply issue, like the 1970's.
We have reduced our dependence on foreign sources on a percentage basis since then.
The real issue is refining. Once that portion of the infrastructure recovers, prices will settle down. I'll wager, though, they will settle at a higher point than they were prior to Katrina.

Well im averaging 22 right now so I wouldnt call that much of an difference. I just hope no one purchased a v6 solely because of mileage concerns
I average 23 as well... up to 26.5 on the highway.
Anyways, I love that Gasoline - Ice Cream comparison... mmmm... Ice cream
BRB I'm hungry

You do have to say that the V6 cars will not feel the effects as hard as GT owners. My last statement was trying to give you some engorgement that the gas issue will pass. Just hope this doesn't kill the awesome muscle cars coming out right now.
By the way the reason I bought my V6 Mustang was because it was a Mustang and the GT was way out of reach in sticker price, gas, and insurance price range. We all need save our pennies if the gas prices continues to skyrocket.

No really, unless you do rural driving, shift REALLY low rpm, or freeways a lot, you shouldn't be getting that. Maybe you got a v6 engine and don't know it.. :nono:
Hahah anyway, i get about 12mpg. Im what you would call "Throttle Happy."
I got 31 mpg on my last tank.
currently I have 121 miles trip, and still have roughly 3/4 tank left. So I'm doing good so far.
It's so hard not to have fun, wonder when I'll crack
(don't have IUP so I calculate the real way)

I live in South Jersey and gas is at 3.29 a gallon and I have a GT. right now I'm getting 14.7mi to the gallon city. Mostly stop and go but I am a little Throttle Happy!! But when I drove it to my friend's place in Conn. I got 26mi on the highway. I do have a 91 firebird with v6 so I will be driving that alot more until gas prices come down. Read an interesting qoute in the paper today that most people remember when a gallon of gas cost as much as a pack of cigarette's. Look's like we may be at that point once again.

that would be silly if they did since the epa on the two GT vs V6 is 1-2 mpg different, keeping in mind the V6 is 4.0L and the GT is 4.6l not much difference in size.
