Omission in Peter Graves' obit was not surprising
March 18, 2010
I saw the recent obituary in the newspaper for Peter Graves. I remember that he was a grand marshal for Medford's Pear Blossom parade. I wonder why that information wasn't in the obituary.

Graves was indeed the grand marshal of the parade back in 1963, long before he became known for his work in the "Mission: Impossible" TV series. At that time, he starred in a show called "Fury", which was billed as "the story of a horse and the boy who loves him."
The omission of Graves' Medford appearance from his obituary is a classic example of the difference between local news and national news. If you're writing an obituary for a national audience, it really doesn't matter much that Graves appeared in a parade in Medford, Oregon, almost 50 years ago.
When somebody in the newsroom remembers that a famous person has some connection to the Rogue Valley, we'll include that information in the obituary. That's one of the reasons we keep a few geezers around SYA — to remind the younger generation of things that happened when they were too young to care.
For example, when Leonard Nimoy, (Mr. Spock of the 1960s "Star Trek" show) makes his final exit, his obituary in the Mail Tribune will most likely note that he was grand marshal of the Pear Blossom parade in 1967, but don't expect to read that factoid in his New York Times obit.
Over the parade's 56-year history marshals have included Oregon Gov. Robert Holmes (1957), a future president (John F. Kennedy, 1960); an astronaut (Capt. Dave Williams, 1996), cartoon characters (Mickey Mouse, Roger Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh) and stars from forgotten TV shows such as "Run Joe Run," "Lancer," and "Shazam and Isis Hour."
