A couple guys at work have the PSP. They seem kinda neat what are all the capabilities of them?

Video(computer download not PSP DVD), mp3, etc?

I've been hearing something like.....only get version 1.0 or 1.5 as the new ones have a "chip" that prevents certain features.

Enlighten me. Thanks!

.........Of course I'll probably just say nah, and get me a speaker and Optima battery combo.

They are talking about Homebrew which only works with v 1.0 and 1.5
1.51,1.52, and 2.0 version firmware are out of luck
New games will require an update, but someone made a nice program to trick the PSP you have V2.0!!
This will come in handy when GTA:LCS comes out

Here is all you need to know
http://files.pspupdates.qj.net/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi
http://www.psp-hacks.com/

and how to get it all to work
http://www.pspupdates.qj.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=14091

Only bad thing is that the PSP's they sell at stores are V2.0, so all these fine hacks won't work.
If anyone out there has a V1.5 I don't recommend them to update as well.
Homebrew is just too great!

So basically what you're saying is......goto a "GameStop" or a used gaming place, and grab a 1.0 or 1.5.

Also same as above.....can it play mpegs, mpgs, avis, and other formats?

lol, yep that 1.5 is the goldmine. Many people don't know about tricking your PSP with thinking it has the new version, so once they play newer games and realize they have to update, they will. V1.5 will soon be really hard to find.
They are working on cracking 2.0, which they have shown great progress so far. (man what these guys do amazes me)

As for all those formats, they won't work normally so there's one solution
1)get the hack to give you the comfort to use them. As far as I know you can play AVI and MP3's. I haven't searched to see what other hacks they've made for other plug and play formats.
They have one called PSP Media Center, but I havent tried it yet. That could be the ticket.

computer stuff like this confuses me. is it just so you can run other thing s that would normally run on ur computer on the PSP?

kinda interested cuz i was thinking about getting one. not for the games, but more for the ability to have MP3s and videos in addition to any games that come out for it. and even thn, ill probly get like.. 2 and then be happy lol

Don't forget that you have a Internet Browser (ver 2.0)
You can run mp4.
Do yourself a favor and get the psp media manager.
You can upload just about any video and mp3 off of your computer, and it will convert the files for you. Version 2.0 also has the ability to set pictures as wallpaper.

Now, I've looked on ebay, and it appears that someone has figured out the code.

Supposedly, you can buy a V2.0 and downgrade to a V1.5.

On ebay do a search for "psp downgrader".

I'd prefer that so that I can buy it new at the store, and have software change it rather than buying it used. People say there are no dead pixels, but....you can't be sure unless it's new.

Really I'm just looking for a movie(avi, mpeg, etc), music player, but with emulator capability.

I don't really understand the Internet thing? Do you have to have your own ISP? Or can you just goto Barnes & Noble, or someother HotSpot, and use their network?

Yep the downgrader has been worked on for a while. I don't know first hand if it works but you can download it already.
There is even a turorial video so it seems very legit.

I'd do this quick, because Sony is fast and is releasing (or already has)v2.01
