Realizing this board was severely lacking in scary, insane Cold War-era weaponry I though I'd share this little gem.

Yes, a cruise missile designed to fly at 1,000 ft (or 300m for you metric loving commies
) at Mach 3+ speeds. Not to mention being powered by a Nuclear RAMjet engine, thus making it a flying dirty bomb equipped with a couple dozen nuclear warheads. It really is scary, but the sheer destructiveness of such a weapon boggles the mind.

Holy Crap!!! 14-26 thermonuclear warheads? Thats crazy. A typical ICBM or SLBM could only be equipped with at least 8-10, but 14-26? It doesn't say what the yield is for each warhead though.

Yup and they are so fast I recall when they were being tested in Northern Alberta ( Cold Lake ) we'd here them comin and wizz our our heads. Did not know what they were untill we went to a local Boonie bar in no where land and asked. I used to build bridges and take care if Ice Roads.

I highly doubt that it was the Vought SLAM you were hearing, as you would likely have died of radiation poisoning within months, if not weeks. Not to mention the property damage if they were testing at anywhere near projected speeds.

You laugh (and I'll admit, it was funny), but he makes a great point. In theory if a target wasn't high-value enough to use an actual warhead on you could actually execute a "strike" that consisted of nothing more than overflying it.

True. I agree. Most nukes, especially ones that are carried by ICBMs or SLBMs are intended to take out large strategic targets like cities. A simple nuclear tipped Tomahawk, or the SLAM, in this case, is more ideal in taking out smaller tactical targets, say an small airbase, or a hardened target like a missile base or silo. Therefore, you don't really need to take out a large area. Nor do you need to have a weapon with a high kiloton yield. It really just depends on the purpose of its use.
