I know, wonder who was the brave soul to remove all of that??? I would guess the vet had to put them under to do it

I'd take mine to the vet if it ever happened.

I've heard that cutting the quills on one end makes it easier to remove. Something about the hollow quill and unsealing it so air can move freely, rather than when trying to remove, you squeeze it and the opposite end (in the victim) enlarges.

I've never tried to confirm this, though.

Ok...My dog (approx. 3/4 husky 1/4 wolf) came home one day from a typical run in the woods and had quills all over his face. Not as many as that dog in the pic, maybe half that amount. They were in the roof of his mouth, gums, all around the outside of his snout. He was pawing at them and whining. I didn't realy know what to do, I was like 16 at the time. I couldnt grip the quills good enough with my fingers so I got some pliers and pulled them out, trying carefully to pull straight so not to break any tips off inside. Once I was done he got a drink and was back to normal and playing as usual. If I remember correctly he didn't even bleed, and if he did it wasn't much at all, just some redness and swelling.

I used to have a dog that would run them down and catch a few. He'd hold them in his mouth and squeeeeeze the shell.

CrrraaaaAAAaaaack!

I'd usually have to shoot the thing after that.

He only did that once with the porcupine, guess he learned his lesson the 1st time! His favorite is woodchucks. After he chases them down he gets a good grip on it with his jaws and just shakes the ever loving snot out of it. Then you can hear it's bones crack each time he clamps down for a better grip....must be the wolf in him hehehe. He's like 12 'human years' old now though, so his killing days are long gone. I don't have a pic but he looks just like the dog on the right in the 1st post.
