At which point is your car a beater?
Here's a question for all my Mustang home boys and home girls. I have a 2000 v6 that is starting to show her age. The header decided it didn't want to be joined with the exhaust anymore and broke the weld. My tape deck stopped working (if anyone knows of where I can get a cheap one lemme know... for real). It will play the radio but the cassette part wont work. Every now and then the car makes a metal scraping sound like somethings dragging. The right rear fender panel has bad under the surface rust. Is my car officially a beater yet?
I would like to know what actually gets a car to that point of which it qualifies as a beater. Does all the rings have to be blown and leave a fog cloud behind you so thick cops can't find you? Does it need to have the Mr. Bean type security device on the door? Does it need to shake at every speed, even when the engine is off?

I think it depends on who you're asking. If the problems are fairly simple to get fixed, I wouldn't call it a "beater". It just depends on how many problems there are. I wouldn't call yours one, though.

I think it depends on the owner's attitude towards the car more than the condition of the car and how he treats the car. I'v seen 4 year old cars look like they were through a war and that makes that car closer to a beater than a garage kept, spotless 89 model! I guess what I am saying is that being a beater is inducely proportionate to the amount of neglect and abuse the car has sustained in any span of time. Of course, if you throw enough money and tender loving care at a beater, you can turn it around!

You car qualifies as a beater when you decide to quit cleaning it or worrying about how it looks. Like when it turns into just transportation. Doesn't matter how it runs. There are a lot of old hoopties around here barely running but spotless.

When I take a screw driver to knock the rust out, don't change the oil because it cost me more in money to change it then to buy a new single cam Honda motor every year lol
