OK, Maybe I'm Crazy, But...
...when I hear some of today's female vocalists, I don't think one of them can hold a candle to the sheer power, sensuality and uniqueness of this lovely lady.
For those who may be too young to remember or appreciate the above, this performance will surely jog your memory.
She's the first solo female artist to have a career of hits spanning more than 50 years - breaking a record previously held by Elvis Presley.
She wasn't hard to look at, either. A Western Nigerian father and a Welsh mother made for a helluva combination.
Yes, I'm old...
...but I could listen to that voice all day long.

I've heard it said that she is absolutely electrifying to watch live on stage, capable of moving her audiences to tears with certain numbers.
I'm not sure she will ever tour in North America again, but I gather she still performs to sell out crowds in the UK.
I might just have to make the trip...
EDIT: I love the comments on this page, especially this one >>

The news of Shirley's birthday reminded me of the 1950’s when I worked in the Citizens’ Advice Bureau located in Cardiff City Hall. The Citizens’ Advice Officer was absent for long periods because of ill-health and, though I was just on a clerk-typist’s pay, I ran the Bureau single-handed. One day a shy young lady called in and said she wanted a career as a singer and needed an agent. I confessed that I probably knew less than she did about agents. However, I pulled out directories, and, as it was a quiet period of the day, we spent some time making phone calls to make enquiries about different agents. When the young lady had made a note of the information she thanked me and left. It was only in recent years that I realized that the shy young girl was - Shirley Bassey.

What's amazing to me is the sheer power and emotion of Shirley's voice. No synthesized enhancements like today. Her voice is a musical instrument all by itself.
Listen to her sing "Somehow", also at Royal Albert Hall (where you really have to be able to belt it out), and then her sensual rendition of "If" when she was 42 (probably taken from her late '70s TV show on the BBC).
And if you listen to her with the Propellerheads performing "History Repeating", it's hard to believe she's 61 here.
I hope I have her youthful vitality when I'm 61.
What a beautiful woman.
