You have to wonder at what point they realized that just driving wouldn't get them home.

The choice quote in that story was:

"I knew I couldn’t take much more ... the blowing of horns and the cars racing by," she told the newspaper. "Floyd [who was driving] was doing the best he could."

 

I'm wondering what the heck the driver's son was thinking.... if anything. Surely he isn't senile too.

Yes.. saw where they have MEDICAL problems, but nothing about mental ones. Guess the story re-affirmed they do.
