IT'S HERE! Today, Wednesday, March 2nd.

Once a year some of the biggest waves in the world make it to Mavericks just outside Half Moon Bay. Word was emailed out yesterday to the best surfers in the world that the contest was on for today. What ever they were doing and wherever they were, these best in the sport hopped on planes and flew in for the event. The waves are breaking between 35 and 50 feet with an occasional 60 footer. This is classified as the most dangerous place on earth to surf; Cold water, rocks, kelp and great white sharks.

I'm calling in sick and going to see this incredible event.

There's a live feed on http://mavericks.bolt.com/

Edit;..... looks like there's a fee for the live feed. Sorry. I'm on the road....see ya.

The photo is of one of the smaller waves a few days ago.

That is very cool, and slightly scary at the same time!

I used to live in HMB before I moved to Chico. I used to drive by Pillar Point and laugh at the surfers who were sitting on their boards who couldn't even get a wave big enough to ride more than 10 feet. Santa Cruz was where the closest surfing action was and then they did some work on the harbor and dreging and now we have Marvericks, a big time surfing location.

WOW........... What a day!

What's amazing is that Jack (?) Clark surfed this spot totally alone for 10 years before anyone would believe him. If you haven't had the chance to see the movie Riding Giants ( http://www.sonyclassics.com/ridinggiants/ ) do yourself and get the DVD. It's a documentary on the history of big wave surfing. Has some awesome stuff on Mavericks.

Wish you all could have been there yesterday. Great weather with less than normal winds, which kept the waves a bit smaller than predicted.....instead of the 40 footers they stayed between 25-30 feet. But still....... no way I'd be out there. From what I hear, NBC Sports will broadcast the contest next month.

I just wish I'd received my Mustang for the drive.

Here's a photo from the this mornings local San Jose Mercury News.
