Okay, so today i had to mow the lawn and the plow truck was in the way, its a 85 F-150 with a 4 speed and a 300ci 6 cylinder. After a few jarring hopping spinning launchs, i figured out how to take off with a standard. Maybe now i will learn how to correctly use the brake pedal, lol. But it isnt as easy as it looks. Takes some practice.

It's all in learning how to use the clutch. Don't depair Doug. We all had to learn sometime and you've got lots of time to get it down.
Be thankful you don't have to learn on non synchro gearboxes! Pretty soon you'll be learning how to heel and toe on downshifts, but I think double clutching is becoming a thing of the past although I still do it from habit when I drive a stick.

whats double clutching? sorry, just dont recognize the term
edit: also, if anyone saw fast and furious 1, vin diesel says something in it about granny shifting. I never knew what that meant either...? any ideas?

From what I understand you had to double clutch in older tranny that were not synchronized. You have to do that to match the revs so the gears would line up (thats correct aint it?). In newer trannys this is not nesscesary so I dont know what vin was talking about.

It's easy, here's what I told my boys and they said it helped them: The engines always turning and the rear wheels are not. The clutch is the link between the engine and wheels so you have to ease it out to start the wheels moving and always push it in when you stop to keep the engine running. Hope that helps.

Double clutching is a car or truck without a synchro gear box .
Heres how it works ...say you are in 3nd and want to go to 2rd gear (gearing down ) you would put the clutch in take the car out of 3rd release the clutch and perfectly time putting in the clutch in and putting it into second without grinding the gears and release the clutch again ...double clutching.Thank goodness for synchro gear boxes :worship:

wait till you get to launching on a hill. When i learned, my friend told me to use my right foot for brake and accelerator and sorta balance it out while manipulating the clutch so you dont roll back. it took me 15 min of trying over and over again to get his method down and the entire time i'm thinking, dangit! why cant i grow a third leg?!

Yeah, double clutching is exactly what it implies. When going down in gears you shift into neutral, rev the engine to match the rpm's in the lower gear, shift and let the clutch back in. It takes fancy footwork to do it correctly. It's a lot faster than it sounds and when you combine it with heel and toe downshifting you've got the car set up for the corner. It's usually done on a track but you can also do it in the twisties. Not necessary today but with non synchro gearboxes it was a necessity.
As for starting on a hill, that's easy. Set the parking brake and when it's time to go slip the clutch until it engages then release the parking brake and you're off with no rolling back. I learned this in San Francisco many years ago. The alternative was backing into a cable car. That's no fun and I've seen it happen.
DSG is for Lesson #2. They are good things.
Less than 10% of all cars sold today have manual trannies and I suspect they will disappear altogether in the next 10 years to be replaced by Tiptronics, DSG's and the like. And I think that's a good thing...

hill starts are easy, you just have to use the e-brake to hold the car until you get the biting point on the clutch, then release the handbrake and go. I do not advise using the footbrake on hill starts, you are much more likely to roll into the front of the car behind you.
