what is the world coming to? uh i'm thinking the more things change the more they stay the same.

University of TX ,Austin, 1966:

The Tower shooting incident took place on Aug. 1, 1966. After one and one-half hours, 14 deaths, and 31 injuries on campus, gunman Charles Whitman was killed by law enforcement officers.

True, but I live in a small dumpy town that most have never heard of in PA! Not only that but the truely scary part is that no one else in the country hears this kind of stuff unless many people die as a result of the incident.

there are crazy people everywhere. and even if there were no guns there would still be crazy people. like the guy that robbed a gas station here a few yrs ago... hacked up the lady with a machete. bet that wasnt national news.

Are you saying that incidents like this are not a big deal because it happens all of the time? I guess I answered my own question of what is wrong with people then. Yes there have always been crazy people, but a smaller % of crimes like this happened in the 60s whereas it seems to happens everyday anymore. Being able to shrug it off as a normal event is frightning to me. Have you ever watched the movie "Brazil" ?

As for crazy people making the news: I have run into, or known, plenty of crazy people in my life. I played with this mans children as a kid! Their family lived a few houses down from us at the time ....

thought brazil was the most boring movie ever.

and i dont think it's a smaller % in the 60's either is called media fascination. the more gore the better for the tv news it seems.

It was a very boring film but I was refering to the way the extras in the background of each scene turn their back to the terrorism happening in the film, pretending it is just a part of daily life. In a way we have become very much like what Brazil was warning us about.

Well as my parents always say "there was a time when we didn't have to lock our doors at night and those days are long gone!"

I gotta agree with hdwrench. The media sensationalizes these events to the max. Just check out an episode of "Cops" sometime. Bubba gets arrested without a shirt(the guilty ones NEVER wear shirts) and we sit there laughing at the idiot(admit it, we all do). Back in the sixties or even the seventies, none of this stuff would make it to the light of day unless there were a lot of people killed.

I am glad no one was hurt. But the paper said two HIGH POWER rifles. Nover considered a .22 a high power rifle IMO.

John, I was wondering if you saw what happened on the tower.

Just another exciting day in NEPA. Remember Selenski last year?

i wouldnt by anymeans consider a .22 a high powered rifle... but then again what can you expect from the usually left leaning media that describes semi autos as automatic weapons on a regular basis. either they dont know anything about the topic they are reporting or they just want joe citizen to think everyone is running around with a machine gun.

Michael Moore's next documentary: America's fascination with machetes.

I say what's this world coming to when in AMERICA, peaceful, law-abiding gun owners get the third degree from liberals, the media, etc. about how owning a gun makes you a monster.

I do support people being way cautious with guns, keeping them as far away from kids as possible, but self-defense should NEVER have to be defended. And another thing, when I was a kid, my dad owned 3 handguns, and even though I KNEW where he hid them (granted, I couldn't get to them), I also knew not to touch them. What's a shame is the lost art of being a parent.

Nope, the police had us stop our car a few seconds before we were in view of it. They just said there is a guy with a gun on a tower near the breaker. (Coal Breaker in Ashley)

I believe that the guy in this case just lost his job and found out that his wife has cancer and must have flipped out.

I wonder why all the soldiers in Afghanistan are armed? Or in Iraq? And boy are they all polite with one another too.
