here in Honolulu gas prices increased (again!) it is at $3.44/gal regular(87). i don't drive to work (no parking available - long waiting list & expensive). on my walk to and from work, stations here change the prices w/in that time frame. get this, the stations that are owned by the refineries (esp. Chevron) charge the most! I found out the smaller guys (independents) charge less... something really wrong with this picture  . local truck/SUV driver - "ho, cuz! no can buy da big rims and tires - gotta pay fo da gas!"

Mark (TomServo92), there are two refineries on the island of Oahu. one is owned by Chevron, the other by Tesoro. don't know if Tesoro is a national chain or not. they both have gas stations here. the rest are; Shell, Unocal/76 - (don't know who they buy their gas from...) Freedom, Cosmo, Costco, Lex Brodie's (a local tire/repair shop), Mahalo, and Aloha - among other stations operated out here. So, one way or another, the "independents" do associate with/buy from the refiner. The Chevron and Tesoro stations here tend to be owned by the company (a franchise could be a better description?). Yes, you are right about the independents associating with a brand - for example, the Aloha brand gets their gas from Chevron yet charge about 10 cents less than the Chevron or Tesoro stations. This is after they get their gas from the wholesaler ("middleman") who actually purchases the gas from the refiner... For the past two weeks, Lex Brodie's has been selling gas on Fridays for about 15 to 20 cents less. the point i was trying to make was the "branded" stations could theoretically be charging less than the "independents" not consistently more (no middleman, right?). Hawaii happens to be one of their most profitable markets.
Also had 5.0 LX notchback - my first Mustang. plus '85 Regal (wanted GN or T-Type instead) was a good car - when it ran.

UPDATE: the gap between big name gasoline stations and the "independents" are closing to w/in $0.05. $3.47 was the highest observed (Chevron) with $3.31 being the lowest seen (Cosmo). $3.42 at Aloha - which buys from Chevron. A station (Chevron) in East Oahu (Kailua side) reporting in this morning at $2.99. Same for Costco. Lex Brodie's at $2.95. I guess we're supposed to be happy that gas is finally below $3???

$2.47 last night at the most expensive station around my place. It was $2.43 this morning where I usually go. I love my Taurus and Cutlass. I fill up the tank once a week, thats it! Not to mention I travel about 420 miles a week on the Oldsmobile.
