I had just finished washing my car at a nearby carwash, dried it off, and tried to start it to get out of the bay. Click. Battery's OK since I have radio, horn, lights etc. The guy next to me helped me push it over to a place to park it and gave me a ride home. I guess tomorrow I'll have it towed to the Ford store a couple of blocks away, and my bet is that the starter gave up the ghost.

Dang. Not how I wanted to spend a Sunday afternoon. I really didn't need this.

do you me you, eh?

stinks about your car, i would make sure to check the starter solenoid first since it is a $25 part instead of the $200+ starter itself

The easiest thing to do when that happens is find a rock (or other hard object) and crawl under the car and give the starter a couple of taps. If its locked up, that might free it.

If that doesn't work, you can try jumping two of the terminals on the solenoid (check a Haynes manual to see which two) to see if that's it.

What I meant, was that I don't remember which two without looking at it.

I used light taps with a hammer. No joy. Today I called AAA--the driver of the tow truck tried the same thing. No joy. The car was a mile and half from my apartment and two blocks from the Ford dealership, so we took it there. The service manager just called--it's the starter. Estimate for the part and labor was $306. Ouch. I didn't need this.

Oh well. At least I should have the car back tomorrow.

BTW, the car's a 95 with 65K miles, and other than a few minor things done after I bought it with 49K on the clock, this is the only thing that has gone wrong. It's not a big deal other than the inconvenience and expense, which I really didn't need now.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions everybody.

The starter alone is $200 and of course there was more. I currently live in an apartment and we can't work on cars here. If the dang thing is fixed by tomorrow I'll be happy.

Reminds me of the time my fuel pump went out when I had my 86'GT. I had just bought breakfast in McDonald's drive-thru. I was almost home and the engine quit. I kicked in the clutch and coasted the rest of the way in and pulled right into my parking spot. Talk about luck!

I got the car back, and it seems to be fine. Time will tell.

That was money I had earmarked for new tires, so I guess I'll have to work even harder next week. Hey, if it's not one thing, it's another.

At least I didn't have to contend with Ivan.

Good News_ a starter for an 86 Bronco costs $35
Better news- it wasn't the starter
Best news- It was a LOOSE starter and when he tightened it the truck is super fine!

That trucks gonna be the death of us. Again, NEVER start a restoration on anything cause its never easy as it looks.
