I heard something in the last couple of days saying Sony is going to quit making plasma TVs. It was a soundbyte so I didn't get to hear the reason why. http://displayblog.wordpress.com/200...ma-tv-no-more/

A friend of mine got a $12,000 Pioneer Elite plasma tv and he loves it.

They are coming out this fall with DLP TVs using LEDs instead of lamps and a colorwheel which might be worth waiting for.

I looked at them and went with another brand. I was looking for a 50" plasma.
I found one at www.pricegrabber.com

I've been looking at other brands as well but I was curious about the Dells. Which brand did you go with and why?

No plasmas for me Id accidently leave a movie on pause and burn an image into the screen. I stayed at a really nice hotel that had a plasma and you could see ghost images of some of the channel logos in the bottom corner because the network never moved or changed them. Id wait for the next generation LCD or DLP. I heard they also make a combo LCD/DLP TV.

That shouldn't be a problem with the equipment that I have. My DVD player goes into "screensaver" mode if you leave it paused. My DVR will unpause itself if you leave it. Also, from what I've been reading, the newer generation plasmas have incorporated technology that helps to prevent burn-in. For me, plasma is the way to go.

I thought the same thing....so I walked into maybe a dozen big-screen showrooms to see for myself... I had my mind set on the Panasonic 50" plasma, but I ended up with the Sony Grand Wega SXRD. They had a blu-ray demo disk on loop showing the 1080p resolution and its amazing, mind blowing. plus 60" is reasonably priced compared to typical plasma 50"s

my brother bought a 42" plasma about a month or two ago. not sure what brand. But you shouldn't have a problem with burn in as long as ou follow the inital steps and if you do start to get any ghosting you can change the channel to one of all static and leave it like that for a while and it will clean the screen.

That's a rear projection TV, right? I already have a Mitsubishi 55" rear projection but I hate the amount of floor space it takes up. I want a 50" plasma that I can mount above my fireplace (which you can't do with a rear projection) which will make my living room space much more usable.

The Sony SXRD is rear projection. If wall mount is the requirement, this would rule out the Sony... I think it is only 'roughly' 18-inches deep, but wall mount is not an option.

I'm Knight's Brother and yes I just bought a 42" Dell. So far the TV has been great. The only burnin I've noticed is after having ESPN on for a while (bottom ticker sticks around). But it goes away after a couple minutes of watching something else. Even playing Xbox hasn't caused any problems. I have not had any distortion during action sequences or fast moving objest that plauge LCDs. For the price I don't think you can beat it.

One thing I did and would recomend is getting a DVD player with upconversion using HDMI output if you like to watch a lot of DVD's. The differene between Coposite cables and HDMI was huge, the colors and picture quality were 10x better. Just buy the HDMI cable online, BestBuy is a rip off on cables.
