Computer Technician (job change)
Computer Technician (job change)
Well, I'm thinking of changing jobs. and I have some questions.
Right now I am a substitute teacher with a preliminary teaching credential, but I am really interested in being a computer technician at a school (don't want to totally leave schools). Some schools around here pay pretty good bucks for comp techs.
I've sort of fallen disenchanted of the whole teaching thing, but I love computers.
I know I gotta get my A+ certification, and all of the teaching/school experience I have will probably give me an inside edge against those that don't have it.
Here is the school I am planning to attend to get my certification
http://www.idt.edu/Education/course.aspx?sched=1&c=1231
Courses last 5 days, 9am-5pm.
Do you think that Is enough time to pass the tests?
Also, some schools may require a couple years of comp tech experience, where may be a good place to get that experience?

Yeah you can pass it in 5 days no problem. I had taken some courses back in college, but never took teh test, then I went back a few years ago and did a cram study guide and then took the test and aced it. Its not that terribly difficult, although Im sure its changed quite a bit since I took it. When I did, win 98 and some DOS was still on the exam, but I think those have been removed since.
A good place to get experience is working in a retail computer shop/store. If you can get in the tech department, you'll learn alot quick!

But it won't pay the bills... well, maybe at first

Imma try to continue tooning while I work somewhere else, and hope to make a name for myself. Also thinking of taking a couple of design courses.
I know more then most that you have to do somthing that pays the bills. good luck with whatever you choose.
Liberal arts is a vaugue thing....you could do a lot of stuff with that degree.
you could be ?....any kind of teacher....maybe a librarian....computer tech sounds cool...historian...a youth minister?
Librarian is something I have in mind.
I'm leaning towards something in computers though, so maybe a computer teacher!
The only bad thing about becoming a comp tech is that I will basically be scrapping my bachelor's degree (I don't really want to do that).

The A+ cert is pretty straightforward... a lot of it is memorization. Experience does help!
In addition to retail another way to get the experience is through volunteer work. Go to places like Make a Difference foundation and volunteer to help out with their computers. The time and experience count on your resume... and it also looks good in the eyes of many employers.

They just changed the A+ so make sure you get the up to date study material.
It's no longer core/OS (hardware/Operating systems)
It's Essentials and then one of 3 paths to take.
It's not hard, just a lot of memorizing stuff you won't probably ever use.
