My best friend is obsessed with getting a 45 ACP handgun since he just turned 21. He is considering the Taurus 24/7 and the Springfield Armory XD.....any advice? I personally see no need to buy a handgun until I move out....but I already have other expensive hobbies.....cars and guitars about train my very limited wallet

I'd rather go with the XD. it has what, 14 rouand ammo cap? What does the Taurus have..
I've never heard anything abd about the XD, and ive heard nothing about the Taurus, so I know what I'd buy.
Actually, I'd want a 1911, but thats a different story :P
As for the Canadian shirt, thats a friend of mine thats not really a friend anymore lol.

I always said that if someone were to break into my home, I would never have to pull the trigger on my AR-15 because they would fall over as soon as they saw that intimidating looking gun.
With VC's gun, he wouldn't even have to pull out the gun. The guy would fall over as soon as he saw that case!

Yup, same here. I don't know anyone that has a gun because simply put, around here there is no reason to have one.

i like guns but they are a lot of money and have other places to put money before getting on.
I went to the gun store but they wouldn't let me hold them without having a Illinois FOID card.
I like the look of the 1911 but they were like $900. I saw a SIG that looked pretty nice for around $450. once i am serious about it all register to get the card and see what feels good.
I had thought of just getting a 9mm but i heard a 9 doesn't really drop someone and you gotta use more then one shot so maybe I'll go with a .40 or .45 or somthing.

Anything .380 or over is considered acceptable for self-defense by most. There's benefits and drawbacks to all different calibers. The most important thing is to find one that you're accurate with, and can afford to practice with. I'm a 9mm fan. I'm always on center and I can afford to keep it that way. Plus I can carry more rounds in the magazine. Heavier calibers may leave a larger cavity, but bullet speed, etc has a significant impact on the energy transfer... and nothing's more important than accuracy. If the .45 makes you flinch an go high-right, then you're better off w/ something easier to manage.
I guess what I'm trying to say is a 9mm center mass will drop someone faster than a 45 that grazes an arm.

I carry a Glock 19 9mm and the bullets you use can have a large impact on what kind of stopping power you have. Currently I have Remington Golden Saber bullets loaded in it but there are harder hitting bullets out there. But I agree....targeting is key and my Glock is VERY easy to keep on center mass.
I also have a Taurus OSS .45 : http://www.taurustactical.com/produc...ategory=Pistol
AWESOME pistol....a little big for a concealed carry but useable. This is a fantastic gun! As soon as I bought this I put my Century Arms 1911 up for sale since I knew I'd never shoot it again when I had this option.
