My first car was an ugly soybean green '49 Ford four-door sedan with the flat-head V8 engine and three-speed column shift. I think we paid about $200 for it. It had neither radio nor heater, but it was freedom.

My first car was a 1992 Ford Escort 1.9L 88 hp. It was all I could afford after moving to the USA. I had it for about 2 years and later on I had another '92 Escort for spare parts since my Escort used to break down all the time.
It looked just like this one.

'51 Ford Fordor, Flathead V-8 and 3-speed w/Overdrive. Exterior was light gray.
Was a 16th Birthday gift from my grandparents as they had just bought a '67 Fairlane 500 sedan.
Beat the hell out of it as all kids do when they have a free car.

Bought my first car in 1971 in FL when in high school. I saved and saved and had $650 total. A very proud moment doing it all by myself. Bought a red 1964 Olds F-85 (V8) that then took me to high school and more part-time jobs. I remember it sucking gas but the local Imperial station was 29c a gallon. Fortunately insurance was never an issue in those days and very affordable. I don't know how teens do it today.
This is exactly the car I had but different wheels.

One of the worst was after driving to a job interview and then as I'm about to leave, it will not start.......I had to go back in and asked if someone could come out and push me off!! AND I did not even get the job Can you say embarrassing!!
