What to do about a clutch

Okay, so here's the problem. I've got a 1991 Pickup with about 285k miles on it. It badly needs a new clutch, it slips sometimes, and at others wont let me go into gear, unless I pump the clutch. I wouldnt hesitate putting in a new one, except I dont expect to have this truck for more than another few years, and as a student, I dont want to put a lot of money into the truck. So, what should I do? How hard is it to replace the clutch myself, and what does it involve? And how much would it cost to get someone to do it? Maybe the TMSers will think of doing something that I havent thought of yet.

remove the drive shaft unbolt the tranny from the crossmember support the tranny with a jack unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing undo any connections from tranny (speedo cable reverse light harness) slide tranny out unbolt bellhousing from engine and there's the clutch 3-5 bolts holding pressure plate on take it off and the clutch disk will fall off the just reverse procedure most shops will charge between 100 to 500 dollars to replace it it's not difficult to do yourself just it's time consuming the bolts on the rear end for the driveshaft will be torqued and have lots of locktight on them just make sure when you get a clutch that it comes with an alignment tool you put it in the new clutch disk stick it in the pilot bearing then put on the pressure plate and make sure to have the flywheel resurfaced. and while its out of the way you can replace the engines rear main seal if it needs it while everythings out of the way

David.

Steven makes it sound easy! I tried it once with my old Ford Sierra. I ended up calling out a mobile mechanic to fix the complete mess I made. I do not think that I would attempt it again!

Im starting to think taking it to a shop would be better, Ive gotten extremely busy as of late, and I know I could do it myself, but my mechanic is gonna give me a good deal on it, so its good. It would be nice to say that I did it though, haha.

Change it or have it changed. It'll leave you stranded soon if you don't.

285k miles? Drive it till you can't. Something(s) other than the clutch will fail soon, no point in sinking money into a car on it's ninth life.
