Rumours suggest a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 217bhp will be fitted. An optional performance package is expected to be offered, bringing the figure up to 227bhp. The production GTI is likely to be available with a six-speed manual or a double-clutch automatic gearbox.

Sharp. It shows a greater tautness, crispness and sense of surface tension than its somewhat softer, blander predecessors. The interior is very nice, if a touch generic. VW really needs to bump up the engine room a bit as the baseline power rating for hot hatches is now hovering around the 250hp+ mark.

 

Golf R will still be available. From what I've read, the engine should be 2.0L turbo rated at ~300 hp and it should have AWD.
