Volkswagen Golf R Gets up to 300 HP

Just like the current Golf R, the new model will be powered by a version of Volkswagen’s omnipresent 2.0-liter turbo-four. But whereas the current car produces 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, Auto Express claims the new Golf R will muster at least 20 more ponies — and possibly as much as 300 hp. Increasing the horsepower count makes sense if the Golf R is to remain a step up, performance-wise, from the GTI. The 2.0-liter turbo-four in the 2015 Volkswagen GTI (pictured) will offer 220 hp and 258 lb-ft, up from 200 hp and 207 lb-ft in the current 2013 car.

Curb weight should also decline, partly because the MQB-based chassis in the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf is lighter than the current sixth-gen chassis, but mostly because the new Golf R will reportedly have a lightened all-wheel-drive system. Whereas a 2013 Golf R weighs nearly 300 pounds more than an equivalent GTI, Auto Express says the mass difference could shrink to about 200 pounds for the new car. The 4Motion system will receive a revised front differential to help reduce understeer.

Lot of horses out of a four. I'd like to drive one to see how smooth it sounds/feels as you're winding it up.

Golf R is an AWD so that should make a big difference.

Volkswagen is well known for not pushing the limit. The last GTI made "only" 210 hp, but it could run pretty well on the track with a much more powerful cars (like the 263 Mazdaspeed3)

That Golf R in the video is so boring. ALmost fell asleep during it's portion.

Focus ST > Golf R. Especially when you factor in the reliability of the Golf

Man, hopefully the boosted 4 in the next gen Mustang finds its way into the Focus with its supposed "300 hp", the extra .3 liters will bring something to the table as well.

And Focus has the better reliability? Especially those early models ...

This is my aunt's '85 Golf with a 1.6L diesel engine. Close to 600,000 km (almost 380,000 miles) on the odometer and still runs strong.

Maybe the European version is built better, but VW has a terrible rep out here. Everyone I know with any VW from the 2000s the car has fallen apart.

But are the new diesels as reliable? I know initially there were issues with the new pollution equipment, but I haven't kept up the last few years. Same with their dual-clutch transmission - clunky & funky were the reports. At one time I was considering a diesel and VDub is the only game in town.

Those were built in Mexico. The newer VWs are much more reliable.

Plus, Focus is not really the best example of a reliable car to comparing to the Golf. Especially those earlier models - those were kings of recalls.

Not sure ... My Golf diesel has been pretty reliable. I had one problem with the turbo (which was 20 euros to replace) and it burns a little more oil than it should (1.5 liters every 10,000 km; more if I don't change oil every 10,000 km), but overall after 200,000+ km it has been a pretty reliable car.

Sweet, I swear I want to pull the trigger on a fescue but its hard to break the Mustang addiction which is hard to do when you see a loaded Focus ST with a sticker at 40k (didn't check to see if they added an ADM) and a loaded GT for 43k. The value proposition just seems better with the Mustang.
