Competition from a somewhat unlikely corner, or unlikely prior to the announcement of the Genesis sedan. This may shake things up a bit in the pony car niche with a potential forth entry, this time from an overseas company.
I might have thought Nissan or Toyota would have been the first up to bat with an oriental muscle car, what with their parts bins already brimming over with the necessary platforms and engines just ripe for slapping together. But hey, kudoos for Hyundai if they step out of the gate first.
Will be interesting whether they'll go a more budget approach and target the Mustang or rather, take it up a notch and aim for the G37 Coupe. Given the G37's level of refinement, I figure Hyundai might go the easier route and target the Stang. Hyundai already has a proven record for low price and high value. Their quality level now seems fine and if the specs on the Genesis sedan are any indication (300+hp 4V 4.6L Tau V8, six speed ATX, IRS...), it can certainly be competitive with the Stang on the hardware front too.
I do wonder how long the coupe varient of the Genesis platform will take before it hits the streets? First thing they ought to do is hire the guy from Winding Road who came up with the rendering and make him head of styling.

I thought the 350Z, what with a midsized V6 and only two seats, more as a sports/GT car than a pony car, which I tend to identify as more a moderately sized RWD V8 coupe with a semblance of performance balance (as opposed to muscle cars which I see as larger, rather single-focus straight line blunderbusses). Not that there isn't some overlap in capabilities or market demographics of course.
Now if Nissan had stuck one of their healthy V8s (4.5 or 5.6) in a 450 or 560Z....

Unless it really undercuts the Mustang GT on price, it might have a difficult time catching on.
Sorry Hyundai, but I'm not dazzled enough by it to consider spending more more than I would for a comparable Mustang GT.

IMO, Hyundai will target the G37 (or possible future, though presently unlikely, GTO?) more than the Mustang. That way Hyundai can prove it can "play with the big boys" - the more up-level competitors - by offering more features, power, quality, and performance at lower prices than is typical in its market segment.
Buhahahahaha... Toyota and muslcecar in the same sentence...

For the export model (America/Europe) Toyota upgraded the Supra turbo's engine (larger turbochargers, bigger fuel injectors, etc.). This increased the power output to 320hp @5600rpm and 315 lb.ft @4000 rpm. The turbocharged variant could achieve 0–60 mph in as low as 4.6 seconds and 1/4 mile (402 m) in 13.1 seconds at 109 mph.
The last-gen Supra TT was more at the level of a supercar in its day with all-around stunning performance but also a fairly stunning price -- for a Toyota -- which is what basically killed it off. Same thing with the last 300Z Turbo or RX-7, excellent sports/GT cars that just got too expensive for their manufacturer's labels (if any of these said Porche or BMW on the hood, they'd still be making them).
The Supra was much more than just a muscle-bound muscle car combining excellent braking, handling and refinement to its still impressive straight line prowess. And it responds to aftermarket tuning like Homer Simpson to cheap beer as the many well-over 500hp Supras today will attest to. Heckfire, some reasonably streetable Supras are pushing well over 1,000hp!

well within range of my point. the Mustang GT msrp was 17,505. so clearly in another league.
if you convert to todays $ using the mustang price increase as a guide it would be $65,000.. and it doesn't match the performance a $45,000 vette offers today.

You can't look at the situation that way. You can't compare Vette today and Supra 13 years ago.
Back then Supra could easily outrun Corvette.

Not really sure what point you are trying to make here Zoran I was just responding to BC's "In other word's, it kicked the current Mustang GT's azz, and that was a decade ago"
it was in another league. even beyond the vette which was 36k in 1994.
