How many of you don't use the clutch for any gears after first?

Most of the time if i was driving normaly in my 1999 i would use the clutch to start from a stop but changing gears to 2nd 3rd and so on i would just take out of gear and rev match and put it in the next gear.

anyone else do this?

It's a lot easier to replace a clutch than it is to replace all or part of a tranny.

Why would you do this in day to day driving?

I was on a test drive in an Infiniti G35 once and the dealer was driving and he said the car could do it, so he did and the whole thing shuddered. Maybe he was just a bad driver but still.

Exactly. Besides being slower it's a lot harder on any car's tranny, especially when you don't get the rev match right. I've had to do this on one car when the clutch cable broke and I had to nurse it to a shop, (getting started after a red light was no problem. Killed the engine, put it in first, and turned the key. It started and I was on to the next light. Not fun.) but otherwise there's no reason to do it at all. That's why cars have clutches.

If you match rev match it has no wear on the car,if you use the clutch you are wearing out your clutch.

The shifter goes in place smooth as butter.

i do it on my 92 from time to time. goes right in. i dont even match revs when it is out of gear. i change right at 2200 rpm and it slides right in. ive never tried it when driving it hard though. my sisters B/f broke his foot and he only used the clutch to get going. he didnt even use it for down shifts. the G35 has such a short throw on the gear changes it should be even easier. the guy probably couldnt drive.

You can't be serious. That's a huge "if". You're putting extra wear on the synchros, as you'll never match the revs exactly.

I have 70K on my current clutch and driven my car hard. The life expectancy of a modern clutch is extremely long.

The transmission isn't designed for clutchless shifting. The more you do it, the more chance you're going to miss one and do some minor damage. Which will eventually add up. Even if you don't miss one and grind it, the synchros are experiencing more wear than normal.

Synchronizers are probably the biggest point of failure in a transmission. You don't want to abuse them any more than required.

Agreed, the syncro mesh was designed for a reason. Like Scotty, I have nursed a car back home when the clutch cable snapped, so I can do it, but I do not see the need for the extra hassle of marching the revs on each change. With the amount of yahoos on the roads now, I need all my concentration to avoid accidents.

Moving to general vehicle discussion.

I did this in my Jeep for 5 years and never had a problem. In the Mustang, double clutching has gotten fun!

Interesting. Other than 18-wheelers, I never saw people not using clutch when shifting gears.

Very stupid not to use a clutch, when you use the transmisson in a way it is not meant to be used you are just asking for trouble.
