I have been thinking about this (told you I would Andy!!)

The thing that hasn't been brought up yet is this.....

Toyota want to raise their prices to try and avert the Protectionist movement making people buy US. Do they not think that the Average Joe on the streets might find this patronising?? I think Toyota have backed themselves into an impossible corner now, darned if they do, darned if they don't. They should have told their CEO to keep his mouth shut, I think that this might seriously damage Toyota's credibility. just my 0.02c

Thanks James You bring up a very solid and very excellent point

I think people will find it patronising to say the least. Yet another mistake that their corporation has made.

Thank you for your opinion James, it is as always, greatly appreciated!

As you would say:

Cheers (I love that saying, maybe I can start it over here )
Andy

They are comparing cars of the current MY. This whole discussion is on Toyota's quality right now, not 10 years ago. If Toyota vehicles are having problems after only one year, do you think they will miraculously disappear and not have any problems 5-10 years from now? If I am buying a new car, the quality of the 1995 MY vehicles means little or nothing, it's what they are doing now. Most people don't keep cars for 5-8 years anyway. You will find that most new cars change ownership after 3-5 years.
Well, my Toyota is 11 years old and it doesn't have problems. And according to ALLDATA it did had recalls.

Most original owners don't keep their cars after 3-5 which is big mistake. I paid $12,000 for 3 year old Intrepid and its been nothing but trouble. I paid $5,000 for 8 year old Camry and I couldn't be happier with her. Buying a new car is just throwing money away, because you can get used car for a lot less money that is just as good as new (like my Camry is).

Typically the reason most new car buyers only keep their cars for 3-5 years is for several reasons. Most, including myself enjoy having the security of a warranty, knowing if something major happens, you won't have to cancel the family summer vacation to Disney World. Another reason is leasing. Another reason is I don't think there are that many people in this world that really enjoy car shopping, buying new eliminates most of the hassle of purchasing a car. You know what you are getting and you can get exactly what you want. Used car shopping is such a pain, it's harder to find something exactly how you want it, then taking to a mechanic to see if it's in good condition, never knowing for sure what the previous owners did to or in the vehicle. I will never buy used again, I think the extra cost of buying new is well worth it.

I used to think the same way, I had two junks in the past (1992 Escort and 1991 Taurus) and I though that if I buy newer car I won't have those problems. First I got 3 years old Intrepid and year later I got 1 year old Mustang. Intrepid's been nothing but trouble, Mustang had few small problems, but other than theft system problems nothing big. And then I got 8 years old Camry because we needed 3rd car in the family. Now that I look back, I can't believe that I spent so much more money on Intrepid when I could find older but a lot better Camry. I like my Camry so much, I wouldn't trade it for any new Dodge sedan. That's my reasons why I think buying a new car is throwing money away. Because my 11 year old Camry is just as good as my friend's brand new Pontiac Grand Am. And I'm pretty sure he'll start having engine problems with his Grand Am sooner that I will with my Camry.

I've only had used cars and have never had a problem with any of them

Buying a new car isn't neccesarily throwing away money either though. If you know what you want and you have the money buying a new car can be a lot less hectic and the warranty is always a positive thing too. Some people like Holderca1 said like to lease which for them may be better. It really all depends on what you like.

As for your friends Grand Am, you may be surprised, if he maintains the vehicle with regular maintenance that 3.8 V6 will run for a very loonnnggg time. The 3.1's and 3.8's are very strong engines being pushrods. They are nothing to sneeze at.

Andy, when I was buying my Intrepid one of my choice was Grand Am. I drove it and I didn't like it at all. It was only 1 year old with 30,000, but engine was shaking really badly.

Yes, but that vehicle may have been neglected Zoran. My wifes cousin had a newer corolla and neglected to change the oil on it for 8k each time. At about 45k the engine was completely shot.

It doesn't matter what brand it is, if you neglect it, it will come back to haunt you. I have a feeling that this owner of the Grand Am did the same.

That's possible. And I also have a feeling that 1st owner of Intrepid did the same thing.

Its quite possible and from the sounds of it, its probably true. Its a shame what people do to their vehicles isn't it?

Yeah Red Star but you bought a Chrysler. Chryslers are nothing but trouble for the most part j/k. Well their compacts and midsizes are anyway. Half of em are based on Mittsubishi platforms too.

Come on guys, lets keep this from being personal.

Anyway, Zoran I left a message with my buddy. I'll let you know when he gets back to me.

For now though here some consumer thoughts from edmunds:

Almost everyone liked it, this is the 2001 4WD version
