There are turbo diesels with mpg's of 70 here now. When converted into US gallons, that is still a respectable 60mpg.
Renault Megane 1.4L Common rail turbo diesel. I tell you, they are the future, even in the states. Plus, they do not have a battery cell that needs replacing every 20k miles for about $4k.....

I've got a 1989 Ford Escort wagon (5 speed) that gets 36 mpg on the freeway and in the 20's around town where I do most of my driving. A friend gave it to me a year ago for nothing. I'm not sure how green it is, but it sure is cost effective. I've spent less than 20 bucks a month for gas in the last year.
I'll be getting rid of it next summer when I move to Poland, and then I'll be looking into one of Renault's diesels. I saw a bunch of them this summer in Warsaw and Gdansk. They make a lot of sense to me.

It is here too, but when you get a 40% improvement in fuel mileage, that more than offsets the increase in cost. When I was in DE a couple of weeks ago, I think that regular was about $2.19 a gallon and Diesel was $2.49. 13% more. (runs pretty much the same here regular $5.80, Diesel $6.14 6% more)

Another trend here in Europe is LPG-powered engines, althoug that's reserved for admirers and followers of Captain Slow.

Zoran, you need to change the batteries every 20k miles. That will cost you more than the difference between regular and diesel.
LPG is ok on vehicles with a big engine, you need a fair bit of power to offset the 15% power loss

Yeah, I think Zoran's right on that one. We've had hybrids on the road for at least like 5 years now or something like that right? Maybe a couple glitches, but no major "All the priuses need new batteries after 20K miles" issues. You can get way more than 100,000 miles out of a regular engine, but they aren't warrantied for much longer, are they? The fact is we don't yet know how long these batteries will hold up beyond their warrantied coverage. But so far so good.
What is with that list? Two entries for the Civic hybrid? One with Navigation and one w/o? Thanks guys! hhehee... I guess they really wanna break it down... but common! Trim levels?
Still, too bad we don't see more Fords on that list... They need their B-segment car and hybrid Fusion already! Those will be key! Along with maybe a couple others i have in mind?
Thanks for the post Jason.
