So You Can't Afford: 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo LP-560
552-hp, 5.2-liter V-10
Price: $202,000
The inexpensive imitator: Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
Before you start writing an angry letter, we know: There's absolutely no similarity between a Mustang and a Lamborghini. The Mustang is a rear-drive muscle car, with a hot V-8 up front and a (cough) live axle at the back end. It's a ruffian that gallops along on old technology. A Lamborghini is the very definition of Italian exotica. There's a lightweight aluminum chassis, sophisticated all-wheel drive, and a scalding V-10 hanging out behind your head, ready to wail. It looks more like something developed at Area 51 than any machine Detroit could churn out.
But Maybe You Can Afford: 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
650-hp 5.8-liter supercharged V-8
Price: $60,000 (est)
But the new 2013 Shelby GT 500 isn't just any Mustang. Ford has boosted the power by a full 100 horsepower over the last one, up to a staggering 650. That's even more horsepower than Chevy's ZR1 Corvette. And though the Shelby weighs about 500 pounds more than the Gallardo, we'd suspect the two wouldn't be too far apart in a drag race.
Here's the most interesting part. The Mustang, according to Ford, will hit a clean 200 mph. The advanced, technology-packed Italian supercar will go only 1 mph faster. That's some serious bragging rights for anyone who ponies up for this Mustang.

Lol...it just goes to show how quickly things get expensive.
The Mustang GT500 will drive nothing like the Gallardo...but it may be as fast in most measures.
Personally, the GT500's powertrain is awesome but it is already more luxurious and spendy than I have any interest in.

That was a nice article. I am impatiently awaiting the release of the 2013 Shelby deakers are calling me every few days to have me come pick up the 2012s they have collectin dust on their lot. it's hard settling for 550 up when there is 650 coming down the pipeline
. I think it is an amazing car. Hopefully the price doesn't jump too high. Sadly ford has hyped it up so much (rightfully so) that I know dealers are going to gouge us on the markups...
Everyone on the planet who has ever sat behind a car and felt themselves become alive when the engine turns over has a car in mind that they will part with far more than they would any other car. For me, that car is the 2013 Shelby GT500. Sometimes it comes down to what you're willing to sacrifice for the sheer power that owning that most favorite of cars gives you. Let's not kid ourselves: getting up in the middle of the night for a snack and sneaking a peek into the garage and seeing that car, that one piece of machinery that stirs our soul, makes every single one of the sacrifices necessary, and reminds you that yes, giving up cable and buying store brands instead of name brands and putting off buying that 50" plasma display really was worth it. Now, I'm not chiding anyone who doesn't want to spend the $ on the '13 Shelby GT500. They don't have to like it as much as I do. But for me, what Ford did to the car from '12 to '13 made it the car for me.

Now of course if Ford would only plop that GT500 mega motor (or Boss 302 motor, or hotted-up EgoBoost 3.5?) in a neo Pantera / GT priced more in the Corvette range...?
Ford's been doing great things lately, maybe time to celebrate a little with a new halo performance car.

the old 550hp gt500 is pretty mellow. Its not a crazy "my god what have we done" feeling.

But the V6 I bought works just as well for me.
