Folks, this is a follow up to my thread about the "advice on 2nd toy".

After much research and analysis, I'm getting much closer to making a decision on my 2nd toy car. Difference is, I will probably be replacing my Acura daily driver with a "fun" daily driver. I will more than likely (if plan goes accordingly) pull the trigger around spring next year. This will allow me to get everything in place...

Again, to reiterate, I AM NOT SELLING THE MUSTANG. Marilyn is too precious to me and I am enjoying her way tooooooooo much. 575whp (and soon, 600whp) is a blast.

My choices are:

A) 2015 STI - I'd buy this from a close buddy. He bought it new last year, had the mods done by a reputable subie shop, and I followed his build a while so I know what I'm getting into. I don't have the complete list of mods in my brain, but it includes a new tune and also E85, etc. He's selling it to me because he wants to get back into old muscle cars, he loves getting back to old stuff (don't ask me lol). It only has 3k miles I think.

B) brand new, stock 2016 STI. I'll pick the color, etc, probably base model. Compete blank canvas for me to play with

I'd like your thoughts please, firstly, on the car itself. Should I get an STI? A fun 4 door I can bring the kids in? Or should I consider another fun car in that same price range? Secondly, if I do get the STI, should I get A or B????

Tough call on this one Burton.
I have been on the forums reading about these cars in the past and I'm not sure about the longevity of the engine. (There are 2 main forums for these cars.) I have heard about certain engine failures, which escape me at the moment. Stock and modded. The AWD would be killer for the winter months though. But,.....for all it's worth, I love those cars. I think they are real sporty looking and of course, the AWD for winter months. There is a shop in MA that is world known as one of the best tuners/mod shops for these types of cars, Kaizen Tuning. I wrote to them a few times in the past when I was considering a brand new Mitsubishi EVO X.

Really? Subaru is known to be one of the most reliable brands. There's probably failures from people who are modding the p*ss out of it with stock internals. In light mod form or stock form, they're probably pretty reliable? Fwiw though, my buddy's STI will have id1000s and an E85 tune.

That's your recommendation, Gabe? I think if I do it, I'll just get a base. I prefer the wheels on the base anyways. The limited gets you a better multimedia interface etc which I could care less. Not sure what else is different though.

Another option I need to look into is the VW Golf R. Relatively same price... But I need to verify of I can get 4 doors.

Even if the build was done by someone who I trust? I know what you mean though... That's what's tugging at me. Maybe new is better, albeit more expensive in the long run.

I was recommending the Limited cuz I thought it would come with a small spoiler like it did in 2007, but after researching a bit, that doesn't seem the case for '16

There have been a number of engine issues with certain engines. I don't recall if the STi is one of them. I'd go stock myself, why buy someone else's idea? Surely it's not exactly what you want...

Unless it was me who did the work on his car I just shy away from that situation

Also I don't really like buying or selling cars to friends or relatives. Especially close ones.

I think there's an option now to opt for the smaller wing. At least that's what I saw in the options and speaking to dealer. I'd go for the big one though so I can relive my inner boy racer. LOL kidding

Well, I think part of the reason is because I don't know much about these subies. I know my buddy pretty well now for 10 years. We're good friends... So we talked about his mods on occasion and I know his car pretty well. It's tasteful for sure...but perhaps a blank canvas is needed.

Yeah... You're right. There's some moment of awkwardness there, but we are still discussing price. So yeah I hear ya. I may be leaning towards new stock.
