The M4 coupe is some 18 mos. away. When you consider the current E92 M3 is going to be made available to order up until June 2013.
I don't know, but for me a twin or tri-turbo I6 after a normally aspirated high revving V8 will be a hard switch for me.
I kind of dread the idea of BMW M division giving up on high revving normally aspirated power plants.
Look at Porsche with the new 991 GT3 coming out with 450 horsepower out of 3.8Ls...
I think the car is gorgeous, just wondering how M is going to pull off the powerplant.

18 months? Blimey (the new Mustang will have been launched by then, and we have NO idea what it'll look like!)
As for the engine......hopefully the additional torque over the high-revving V8 will make it worth downsizing.
The twin-turbo V8 in the M5 and M6 seems to have been well received, again, offering bucket loads of torque compared to the 5.5 V10 in the old cars.

Its not just the power, its the sound of the S65 powerplant. Stock they are extremely quiet, all you hear is intake roar from 8 individual throttle bodies, but when you ditch a set of the cats and add a straight through cat back setup, well its pretty awesome banging gears at 8600rpm.
The post about lack of torque from the current V8, well let me just say there isn't one lazy gear in this car. It revs pretty freely..
The new powerplant from what I am reading is just going to be a thoroughly gone over N55 powerplant, not something started from fresh like the last generations of M motors, the S65 in the M3 and the S85 in the M5. Love the way the car is looking though, ceramic brakes are going to be a big plus, not to mention the weight reduction of around 200lbs.

Well the sedan M3 will be here probably by next summer of 2014 with the M4 the following spring.

A pic of the motor...the S55 powerplant. Suppose to be in the 415-450hp and 395 ft/lbs. of tq.
More likely in the 415hp range but the car will be as I reported some 200lbs lighter than the outgoing E92 M3.
Video of testing at Nurburgring..

Gotta love the quickness and crispness of those DCTs -- sounds like the execute a shift between the firing of individual cylinders.
Yeah, the M4, and presumably M3 sedan version, will undoubtedly be very compelling players in the mid-priced, mid-sized sport coupe/sedan market. It will also be interesting to see how the 2015 Stang shapes up too, what with a bit of dieting and a fully modern chassis for once. I suspect the 2015 Mustang GT, or ST, will make for a sharper competitor than even the current Mustang is.

In the video clips, it sounded like some of them were DCT while others, with more drawn out shifts, manauls. The exhaust does have a very nice rasp to it, a bit less metallic than the old E46 M3s, but still very sports-car sharp and crisp with enough meat/depth to the note to clearly separate it out from the legion of fart can four-blatters.
