The next-gen Corvette
The next-gen Corvette

The next-gen Corvette. Speculation is beginning to ramp-up about the next-generation Corvette - which will be the seventh in the iconic car’s lineage - thus the shorthand reference to it as the “C7.” Originally slated to be a mid-engine car, then changed to a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration with a mid-engine supercar variant to be built in limited numbers along side it, the C7 will make its debut as a 2012 model, with conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive architecture. Expect a car that’s 7/8 the size of the current car and as much as 300 pounds lighter in order to deliver the kind of mileage numbers required. Also, a standard drive train that features a high-performance V6 is being strongly considered. But no worries, an ultra high-performance V8 will still be the featured powertrain, however, so that aspect of the Corvette will not change. The Sting Ray concept that appeared in the sequel to “Transformers” last summer is the design influence for the new car, which Ed Welburn has already said will feature a “split” in the rear window reminiscent of the 1963 Sting Ray.
A vette with a v6? Imma go out on a limb and say that'll never happen. It's a flagship car that gets dismissed on any major ramifications of EPA numbers. It'll get the did vvt motor before it gets a v6 I'd bet.

No freakin' way a Vette with a V-6.
I could see a smaller displacement V-8, but GM might not have the technology money to have anything like that in development. No way to a V-6 Vette. It would fail miserably. People buy Vettes, because they are V-8 sportscars. Why would anyone buy the V-6 off the lot when a V-8 was available? It's just crazy. Make a more efficient V-8. You can do the cylinder deactiviation and the gear skipping transmission, lighten the car, and get the gigantic displacement of the motor reduced.
Split window FTMFW!
That would be huge in my book. And 7/8 the size. I could see that. But she better keep her long nose.

yeah.. I dont see a v6.
A six cylinder Vette would be hard to swallow for the hide bound Vette buyers, even if the Vette originally was a six banger.
Perhaps the Corvette ought to be split of as a sort of separate line rather than a single model, maybe something like an AMG or M or whatever. Then there could be an entry V6 Mako, the mid line V8 Sting Ray (C7) and a halo car (mid engine and/or 10+ cylinders) named after some other fish.) Thus, freed from being so constricted, these models could become technology demonstrators for various levels of cars, from low end to high end, cutting edge. the Mako would basically go after Porsche Cayman class cars but for 3/4s the price and likewise for the Sting Ray (basically the C7 version of the current car) for the 911s, M3s and the like. The line topper, call it the Orca for the time being (apex ocean denizen), it can be freed from cost constraints to become a true exotic car not only in performance, which the ZR-1 does pretty well already, but also in appointments and features, which the ZR-1 doesn't do terribly well (Cobalt steering wheels don't cut it at the $100K+ flight level).
Given GMs straights, we're lucky simply to get a C7 at all, but it makes for an interesting thought.

My all-time favorite Corvette is a 1963 Split-window Z06 (an option, not a model).
I just traded-in a 2003 Z06. It was a great car. I bought it used for $27K five years ago. It never caused any problems. I wouldn't pay $10K for a used V-6 Corvette.
The Ford dealer happily took my torch red Z06 in trade for a torch red 2010 Mustang GT with Track Pack.

I guess this makes it more official as an actual clue , or official release as to what the c7 will look like (Sting Ray).

Looks like plastic surgery gone wrong.
The Corvette Stingray Concept was developed as an internal design challenge to combine classic Corvette cues with surprisingly high-tech features, modern materials, and a striking new appearance. The car is well-appointed with a clamshell hood, scissor-style doors, ergonomic seats, rear-view camera with night vision enhancement, and a high performance hybrid drive. Interactive touch controls allow the driver to customize the power and efficiency of his or her ride and share it with friends via the in-car camera system and advanced telemetrics.
And this will all be paid for by American taxpayers? Has GM checked with Pelosi yet?
The Viper is gone (2011). The Corvette will be lucky to just survive since they are controlled by Congress. GM (Government Motors) will be lucky if they can just build a C6.5 Corvette.

not perfect but I'm digging that for the most part..
Maybe, but:
Well, the car will include technology to customize the power while sharing this with your friends via advanced telemetrics? They will use a clamshell hood and scissor-styles doors?

Well since when did production cars include all the fancy gadgets that the concepts or show versions get? I doubt very seriously the much of the tech willl make it as much as I can see the styling clues. Clamshell hoods are not exotic and have been on vettes before (C4) so why not here. Scissor doors? Doubt it there too.
The Corvette is about as similar to the Viper in a selling standpoint as it is in a styling standpoint. The Vette is the Flagship car for Chevrolet and the most profitable car GM sells. Bolling green has been taking in steady profits despite the woes the rest of the company has been struggling with and were quite proud of themselves. The Viper was not designed to be profitable and wasn't which is probably the biggest reason it's going bye bye. Congress is hungry for money and since the Corvette makes more than its fair share than any other vehicle in the fleet I don't see congress getting in its way. Since this car is basically modified C6 anyway it probably wouldn't be a stretch to make it a C6.5.

Your post is interesting. We'll see what is actually released. I am a Ford guy, but I do own a Z06 and a few Porsche cars.
I remember seeing the workup on Sideswipe/Stingray and thought at the time it was meh. The more I see it though the more I like it. The front and rear still don't completely have me but that side profile is drop dead gorgeous IMO. Those pics are some nice shots of it fvcrew22.
And I would agree. The C6 is just a tweaked C5 so I can easily see it happening again. The platform isn't the automotive perfection of the FR layout but it's a pretty good iterration that could probably survive another tweaking to produce yet another model.

the C6 has done extremely well with the chassis that it has. the mustang was able to keep the same platform from 1979 to 2004 so they could keep using the C5 from 1997 to 2022.
