The new chevy Volt is "kind of electric"
lolgm
So GM stated that this car runs on electrical power at all times, seems as though they may have been a bit misleading with that statement. no surprise but come on, so much hype over that car and now it's "kinda electric" lol

Well, to their defense...
It operates as an electric at all legal speeds.
(Until it runs out of battery power)
Guaranteed to get run over on my way to work, where the average speed is 75 mph in a 55 zone.

"during high speed acceleration on steep inclines, the engine/generator and battery work together to deliver the electric power required. "
Therefore:
"Electricity powers the Volt at all speeds."
It always runs on electric.
Sometimes it is "helped" by the generator.

It will sell to the tree hugging nut jobs. But, how do you make a real business case for it? You cant. Some of those tree huggers are hiding a Escalade in their garage too. They just try to make the point they are going green. My goal is to burn as much rubber and gas as I can afford before I die. There are some strange people out there no doubt that will buy it but this thing has taken as long as the Camaro to get to market. GM's marketing sucks to hi heaven to boot.

No, they say this doublespeak:
"during high speed acceleration on steep inclines, the engine/generator and battery work together to deliver the electric power required. "
Therefore:
"Electricity powers the Volt at all speeds."
It always runs on electric.
Sometimes it is "helped" by the generator.

This routine about stopping along the I5 (with OR Gov Kulongoski's recently approved $$$ project) for a half hour quick charge is BS.
The only way an EV works is if you have an onboard gen until you get home to plug into the grid for an all night charge. And that Gen needs to be a 2-3 cyl diesel gen that runs on any type of biodiesel/waste produced fuel sort of like Back to the Future's onboard converter.

Well better than the Leaf, which not only charges about 2200 bucks to install the at home charger (I've read where this isn't really a hard install and could be done cheaper) but has alot more range, Nissan by comparison is thinking about offering free car rentals for long distance trips, 'casue you know, the Leaf can't do it. Ford has said pure electrics are bunk and that plugin hybrids are the current best bet.
On a slighly related note, I read a small article in the Economist that said if the UK went completely 100% electric that it would only reduce carbon emissions by 2% because of the way they generate the bulk of thier electricity, great I suppose unitl you factor in the subsidies required to do so that which IIRC would end up costing the UK £150 billion.
The article's solution would be to implement a carbon tax to offset the subsidies, which makes me wonder if the carbon tax thing catches on would they attach it to biofuels like ethanol? Definetely not the solution to our energy dependace worries, but y'know what for an internal combustion engine addict like me; a pulley swap, a tune, a few odds and ends and possibly an injector swap would make E10 mighty tempting.

I think it's like $25,000 after government $7,500 rebate compared to Volt's $33,500.
